Yeah, total cow/flat rock scenario here around 04:30.

BTW, for you non-residents, when Pat says "MISSING VALLEY", he means Mission Valley (or, MISSION VALLEY!!!!!, if you prefer), which is actually the San Diego River Valley. It used to be cow pastures and cropland but has been heavily (and unwisely) developed into commercial properties, retail, office and some hotels. It all gets flooded every few years.

We have a few days of dry weather before another storm hits mid-to-late next week. That gives me time to take care of the caulking around the A/C unit in the grandkids' room. Looks as though we are going to have a miserable week coming up......the following statement issued by Environment Canada:

2:50 PM PST Sunday 07 December 2014
Special weather statement in effect for:

East Vancouver Island

Warm, wet and windy weather forecast for much of coastal British Columbia beginning Monday night and continuing through mid week.
A series of intense weather systems will approach coastal British Columbia.

The initial system approaching Haida Gwaii this afternoon will weaken as it crosses the South Coast on Monday. A second more intense front will bring heavy rain and strong winds to Vancouver Island and parts of the inner South Coast beginning Monday night and continuing through Tuesday morning. Heavy rain and strong winds will redevelop on Wednesday morning as a third system moves across the coast.

Significant rainfall amounts for the 3 day period will range from 50 to 100 millimetres for many areas and up to 200 millimetres over southwest facing slopes. Freezing levels are also expected to increase to near 2000 metres for the North Coast and to 2500 metres for the South Coast through mid week.
The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended

What's interesting is the rainfall amount..... I haven't seen 200 millimeter amounts listed by them in a long time! :yuck:

Nothing much new here. It's winter.

Nearly 8 inches? That's quite a bit of rain. Wasn't that fairly normal in the Canadian Southwest/ US Northwest at one time?

There have been some big,and I mean BIG rain events which have happened years ago...... Winter here is the time for the rain to fall, but most of the time the weather office listed rainfall amounts of the order to expect 50,75,100 mm in rainfall accumulations....... but I have to go back quite a number of years to to remember even seeing 200 mm listed even for system facing southern mountain slopes..... this is what to expect in our area when a possible El Nino beckons

These crazy weather systems are nicknamed the "Pineapple Express" because their moisture laden journey starts with the warm Pacific Ocean waters of the Hawaiian Islands.....the jet stream does the rest

A fairly well written article on this phenomenon is here:

Uh oh...... the weather office has bumped up their statement to warning now:

Warnings 11:45 PM PST Sunday 07 December 2014
Rainfall warning in effect for:

East Vancouver Island

Rain, at times heavy, is expected.

An incredible series of storms are set to cross the BC Coast this
week. An intense jet stream over the Pacific is gathering very warm
moist air from southern latitudes. A subtropically-influenced
airstream will bombard the mountains of Vancouver Island and the
Lower Mainland from early Monday through Thursday morning.
High rainfall rates will and a prolonged period of rainy weather
will create an extraordinary 3 to 4 day rain event.

The first two storms will boost rainfall totals well above the
warning criteria for a 24-hour period. Following systems will add to
the week's rainfall and the initial warnings will likely be extended
for successive 24-hour periods though mid-week. The inflooding warm
air will drive the freezing level to nearly 2500 metres. In some
areas, additional water from snow-melt will add more water to
drainage basins, creeks, and rivers.

The East Coast of Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, Metro Vancouver
and the Fraser Valley-West including Abbotsford, will receive between 25 and
100 millimetres of rain by Tuesday morning. And that is just the beginning...
Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required. Please monitor local media or Weatheradio. Email reports of severe weather to pacificstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet with the hashtag #BCStorm.

10:34 PM PST Sunday 07 December 2014
Wind warning in effect for:

East Vancouver Island

Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring.

A FAST MOVING FRONTAL SYSTEM WILL CROSS VANCOUVER ISLAND MONDAY AFTERNOON BRINGING SOUTHERLY WINDS OF 70 KM/H GUSTING TO 90 KM/H. THESE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO DIMINISH EARLY TUESDAY MORNING AS THE FRONT MOVES INTO THE BC INTERIOR.
Gusty winds can damage soft shelters, tents and awnings at outdoor events.

Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required. Please monitor local media or Weatheradio. Email reports of severe weather to pacificstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet with the hashtag #BCStorm.

I've never seen it rain anywhere as hard as it rains in Vancouver, BC. Like a million cows peeing on a flat rock at the same time. I remember stepping out of building when the rain first started, and by the time I made it to the curb, the gutters were bank full! I grew up near the 'rainforest' where the redwoods grow in California, too. The Coast Range in Central Cal is composed mostly of sand. I was there when a whole 'mountain' got so waterlogged it collapsed, burying a small town. http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/general-news/20120106/devastating-disaster-storm-of-1982-left-22-dead-many-more-homeless

Back here, we sometimes get a foot in a day, which results in a massive flood, usually of the 'flash' variety. I only saw one of those in California. We were camped in the mountains on the Mokelumne River, when a cloudburst caused a small dam upstream to break. Fortunately, our vehicle and tent were about 6 feet above the now raging river that had been a gentle stream minutes before, and the road didn't get washed out. That was the fastest teardown of a camp on record, though.

5-10 C for the next 14 days no frost no winter... and cold in Canada and USA predicted... meaning winter is a nono here like last year.
With 2 days of temp's below 0 C we already had more "winter" as the whole last one of 2013 - 2014....

The NWS has issued frost warnings for the inland valleys of San Diego County overnight. This should prove exciting—around here, people freak out whenever the temp drops below 60°F (15°C).

Looks like a new winter storm is bringing you some cold weather this week, and maybe a wee bit of snow for us. I love making snowrats.

I try not to give that truckstop any business anymore anyway. They got bought out by pilot. Prices on everything including the restaurant went up 30% just because. They wrecked ALL the Bosselmans. Pretty much every truckstop they take over they wreck it. The unusual thing though is they left the Grandma Max restaurant intact in most of them. They just rammed the prices outta site in it.

Usually the first thing to go is the sit down restaurant and they jam a subway or Wendy's or other FF joint in there. Or they turn it into a flying J and stuff a Dennys in there which is just FF with waitress service.

Soo many of the good stops are gone anymore. Makes me kinda pissed.

So John will take this shit over summer heat, well kid you can HAVE it. March may be windy but at least not so cold and the good thing is we'll march straight into April. Unfortunately I don't think she'll appreciate it much so I'll tell her to get her butt out of the street before we start.

Is your problem grass or woody plants? Goats are browsers, they like leaves and green stems. Sheep are grazers, they like grass.

My browser is a Firefox. Grazin' in the grass, can you dig it? Forget the pigmy goat and get yourself a pigmy pony, then you can go along the border line picking your lonely dental floss. Just pickin' it up an' waxin' it down, in a little box you can sell uptown. Gonna be a dental floss tycoon..............

The local TV stations this morning are in code red alert status. We have the slight possibility of 1/10" of sleet/ice by 9:00am. One station has a mobile reporter out on the road. The breaking news is that the fellow found 3 sleet pellets on the grass in Ashland, about 20 miles north of Richmond.

Yeah, we are forcast to see temps dip in the single digits and even below zero on at least a few nights. In addition to the bitter cold there is also a high wind watch in effect saturday afternoon into sunday afternoon which will accompany a snowstorm and then more bitter cold for at least the next week.

We are actually colder right now than some parts of the Canadian Yukon territory. At this rate I won't have to move up there.

So far this is one of the coldest winters we have had since I've been living here. And yet, despite the cold weather the heavily polluted Bronx River ( less than 1/4 mile from me) still won't freeze. Sometimes after an extremely cold night you will see a yellowish waxy coating on the surface of it "water" but it dissolves as soon as the sun hits it.

Depends on how this snow tracks as to how much we get. NWS out of Pittsburgh says we can get 1-2 inches overnight, OR we could get 6-8 inches, they don't know for sure.
