Just as well. The WX here is cool and dry with highs in the 70s. Around here that is "Painting Weather". I'm on my 15th gallon (out of 30) with a three board fence and barn that needs to get done before winter hits. Oh my back, where is my Advil.

According to my wife "White is out". I had to switch to black so I look like all the neighbors. I tried an airless sprayer the first time. For every half gallon I got on the fence, a half gallon went into the atmosphere. Now I use a brush. I'm pretty vigorous with a 4" brush. After I'm done for the day, I come into the house looking like a hunched over giant Chocolate Chip Cookie.

Not near the century mark here, but we did manage to crack 70. The leaves are a month ahead of schedule, we've got about 25% red/orange right now and they expect it to peak next weekend. The sun seems much stronger than usual for early October, nearly oppressive despite the temperatures. Supposed to rain most of tomorrow, so I guess it's a good time to read or watch some movies.

The leaves are already past peak here. About 50% of the leaves have fallen. In the city, the news is telling everyone to come up to see the foliage, but there is little to see. A tree here and there that has red leaves, most have the brown that is seen in a NY City park in the fall.

Still, it is a bit over two weeks before the peak was the last two years... I wonder if El Niño is going to crank up this winter?

Winds here were at least 60 mph with some higher gusts to 80 or 90. The rain was coming in the windows because it was falling vertically, smashed against the windows making its way into every tiny crack or crevice. Power was out over wide areas and as usual heavy flooding and downed trees were rampant. It was the worst storm I've seen since Sandy.

That's the key word right there, HYPE as in sensationalism that pervades news and weather reporting these days. They jump up and down like James Brown, then when it's over say "whew, we dodged a bullet". BAH! Years ago before going to bed I waited up for the next day's forecast and when the weatherman (a REAL METEOROLOGIST, not some fluffy blonde bimbo) calmly said be sure to carry an umbrella I knew we were in for it.

Astronomy is my most challenging hobby. I have a small, but decent telescope, and I'm like a bumbling idiot with it.

I like it but I can't stand straining through a peep hole. Thus, in the past, I rolled cardboard tubes to mount a small camera.

I hope rain never is the headline here. Cold, was this morning though.

We were between 26ºF/-3ºC and 28ºF/-2ºC on the mountain here (hill to those of youse who live west of the Mississippi River). That's about 10ºF/6ºC colder than was predicted for this area last night. Clear blue skies with the last of the trees turning Orange. Most are bare of leaves already.

Damn.... she is getting cool there.....the northern parts of B.C.and Alberta are getting cold weather with the snow that goes with it......here on Vancouver Island it appears the predictions of this being an El Nino winter is coming true,it's one of the warmest Autumns we've ever had,and nowhere near freezing.....lots of rain which is great, the Cowichan River was in serious trouble with low water levels for the fall salmon run.The leftovers of hurricane Ana did drop about 100 mm of rain on us.......

If the El Nino thing does pan out for the winter,if my memory serves correctly, it could spell a real rainy season pattern for California and the major part of the U.S. Southwest! I think Carl and Eddie should be happy! .....if you hate the rain,my apologies......

If there is an el' nino they aren't anticipating it to be nearly as strong as they were earlier on. It may just be a fizzle.

Barrow Alaska is seeing temps in the single digits so the cold air is in place in the arctic, all it has to do is start pumping southward. Aside from the severe nor'easter that hit a few days ago it;s pretty normal for this time here. Mostly overcast with daytime temps in the low to mid 50's and nigts with temps in the upper 40's to 40's. Very typical fall for Southeast NY. Cold or freezing weather usually doesn't hit us till late November or December. Usually after Thanksgiving.

Worse than we got. It only got to 37 with rain but no snow. Yet. They were talking about the 'fact' that Halloween in NYC has never had any snow.:bs:

:soapbox: When I was a kid (way back before the invention of the wheel), we had two. One was a trace of snow and a couple of years later, we got 4". I never forgot how cold those costumes were in the snow and how my sneakers were sliding all over the place. The earliest snow was in Mid-October but it didn't actually stick. So, as of late, the weather is what they say it is, rather than whatever it is.

Another extreme storm here yesterday, as bad or worst than the one we had last week. Apart from Sandy 2 years ago these last 2 storms were the worst to strike here since Sandy. Torrential rain blown by extremely high winds (60 - 90 mph), trees down and power out everywhere. These are two severe storms back to back. And they say global warming ain't real...Hardy Har Har... :snicker:

Only good part is that the storm passing has ushered in some cooler air so it finally feels like autumn. Indoor humidity is down to 35% and with the window open just a couple inches it's a comfortable 60 deg F in my office.

Winds are still blowing like a banshee out there. I would say at least 50 - 70 mph gusts.

Nearby resident says that he woke up to the sound of a loud bang and the house shaking. He thought the tree smashed through his house. He was lucky it was across the street and didn't hit any buildings, A few houses away a major tree limb down wires ripped down and damage to a house,Almost a carbon copy of Hurricane Sandy 2 years ago. I'd love to get a snow machine. Unfortunately we don't get enough snow around here to justify it. For the 2-3 months of winter we get around here (sometimes without snow) a snow machine would end up sitting on wooden blocks 90% of the time. Most pof the time when we do get snow the streets are plowed and salted within hours. It's sort of like our snow thrower. Some winters we need to use it frequently Some winters we need it only once or twice or not at all. The snow machine will have to wait till I move north. And who knows, with climate change the north may be tropical by then.

Special weather statement in effect for:

East Vancouver Island

A major change in the weather pattern will begin on Monday.
A shift in the flow pattern will occur Monday following the passage of a moist and unseasonably mild Pacific frontal system this weekend. A cold Arctic ridge of high pressure building over the BC Interior will cause strong northeasterly outflow winds to develop through the mainland valleys on Monday. Consequently, temperatures will lower to about 5 degrees below seasonal normals by Tuesday with freezing temperatures expected for several nights.
The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.

Please monitor the latest forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada at www.weatheroffice.gc.ca.

LOOKS LIKE A MIDWINTER PATTERN SETTING UP NEXT WEEK ACROSS THE
WESTERN HEMISPHERE AS THE SHARP RIDGE JUST OFF THE WEST COAST KNIFES
NORTHWARD THROUGH THE YUKON...SETTING UP DEEP LONG-WAVE TROUGHS
NORTH OF HAWAII AND OVER EASTERN N.A. THE HIGH LATITUDE OF THE
RIDGING OPENS THE DOOR FOR UNDERCUTTING OF THE WESTERLIES ACROSS THE

It occurs to me, that one way to stop this global warming thingy, is to quit putting heaters in automobiles. Just imagine how many BTUs of heat are wasted into the environment during winter in places like Minnesota.

I just don't understand why none of these scientist want to speak with me and get some of my views on how to fix things.

I think I'll give Olga Konstantinovna Kurylenko a call and see if she wants to go out for some barbecue.

Having suffered thru 10 out of 11 cold, snowy or cold and snowy winters here since 2002, I can sympathize with those who are already getting dumped on. Here's hoping it all moderates and stays on the warm side the rest of this fall and winter.

the rats in my garage have several YEARS worth of food stockpiled for many generations to come!
Every night my wife brings in the PIT BULLS so they don't bark and annoy the neighbors. meanwhile the rats scavenger all the food left in their dishes. 1 piece at a time, they carry it back into the garage and chow down! The rats are FAT on dog food. I estimate there is probably 100 or more pounds of it in there somewhere. Can't get at them, it is packed floor to the rafters with junk. OH rats eat good in Crest. The snow as coming down in torrents and horizontally from the extremely high gusts. for at least an hour it was a complete white out. But for this area this was a very mild storm. Almost like a gentle spring rain in tornado alley.

I can't tell you how tempting that sounds after my enemy ice has decked me so many times. What's the crime like and how much Spanish do you need to know?
I live in Guadalajara, which is the second largest Mexican city, with a population of around 4.5 million people. For the ordinary citizen, I suspect that the crime level is comparable to a large city in the US. Much of the worst violence happens between opposing organized criminal groups. Also, some areas of the country are well-known to be more dangerous than others. The nightly US news probably leads many of its viewers into believing that the whole country is a hot bed of violence.

English is the most popular foreign language for school students and is commonly encountered with well-educated professionals, people working in the tourism/hospitality sectors and even some lesser-educated people who have resided in the US (possibly illegally) for extended periods of time. Still, the majority of the population only speaks Spanish. So, with a few exceptions, living in most Mexican locations would be difficult without at least a basic conversational level knowledge of the language.

The good thing is that Spanish isn't too difficult to learn. Unlike English, which has lots of pronunciation rules and has each vowel making several different sounds, Spanish pronunciation is more uniform. Spanish words are generally pronounced just like they are spelled. With a little Spanish school and cultural immersion, one would quickly obtain a basic proficiency in the language.

Aside from the towns bordering the US, there are some parts of the country where English is also frequently encountered. These are in the international tourist destinations along the coasts and in a handful of communities that are popular with foreign retirees.

In the international tourist destinations, the best jobs (wages/tips) go to those workers who speak English -- hence the motivation to learn the language. I have a few American/Canadian/British friends who live in Puerto Vallarta, along Mexico's Pacific coast. Some of them get by fine with very little Spanish, but living in an important coastal tourist location can be more expensive than other places.

About a forty-minute drive from Guadalajara, along the shores of Lake Chapala, is a town called Ajijic. Many retired American and Canadian expats reside there and take advantage of the area's very mild climate and lower cost of living to stretch their pension/Social Security dollars. There are expat communities in other parts of Mexico, as well. San Miguel de Allende and Cuernavaca are two popular destinations.

If anybody is seriously considering a such big change in lifestyle, whether it be a move to Mexico, or to any other country; the best advice I can give is to rent a furnished home there for six months before deciding to buy a house and deciding to move (or sell) all of your possessions. There is a difference between visiting a nice place (possibly during a short vacation) and actually trying to live there for an extended period of time. Some relish the change, while others just get homesick.

Matt

Thank you Matt. I am seriously considering a change of scenery and looking into all the options. Nothing in the near future, but the way things are going, you can never tell. Being on disability, I'd have to live within a few hours of the US for now so that if necessary, I can be at a doctors office that they approve of. Otherwise, vaya con Dios.

I've had 3 years of High School Spanish (as well as some Latin and French). I have an excellent accent when I speak Spanish and have fooled spanish speakers who think I can speak it. My limitation is vocabulary right now. Presently I'm getting interested in Hebrew. But the romance languages have a lot in common, even French and Portugese, so if you can learn to hear CW, most languages shouldn't be a problem. Now to get off my lazy butt and do some real studying. ;)

I'm curious what you do in XE land. Who do/did you work for and what is/was your area of expertise? Inquiring rats want to know.

Damn!! ........she got cold last night...... -10 C when I checked this morning...... I found out up Island it got to -17C .....looks like another cold one tonight.Nice thing though, when these Arctic highs set up over the interior of the province it clears out all moisture and gives us brilliant blue sunny skies.....a rarity for us in November! :-D

We'll be lucky if we make it above the freezing mark today

Today will be 58 deg. Tomorrow only 37 but the day after back in the 50's followed by 30's and 40's the next few days with a possibility of some rain then snow then rain and then maybe a bit of frozen mix and then rain. Gotta love NYC weather. You never know what it's gonna throw your way. :) Could be 10 deg F and a blizzard today and 70 deg and like spring tomorrow,
