Snow, snow, snow. Well getting 3-5 inches or 8-12 inches all depends on the track. The Weather Channel says 3-5, NWS Pittsburgh 3-8, local TV weatherman, who knows he act s like he has no clue.

Fnow? Is that like snit? We have about a foot of white snit all over the place right now, and we haven't really had our annual average yet. We're way behind in fact.

We usually call it something else the first time each year, but then it rapidly becomes snit. Maybe by MAY when we hope it will stop, we will call it fnow here, too.

Roads have been insane here, they iced up more than usual in the Front Range. Many here in CO think it's OK to use all season tires. No, not when it turns to ice. Stay off the roads if you slide and/or can't handle a skidding vehicle. Get some decent tires if you have to drive in true winter conditions, no matter what.

For instance, the "studly" and "siped" winter tires on my 'lil Integra beater commuter:

Man-o-man. It's been raining like a cow standing on a flat roof for the last several days. The snow in the upper elevations will be good for spring run off, and this storm looks like it will bring some very good ski conditions for our friends in Colorado. I think the Pope has been receiving some of this holy water from hell, too. I like the rain, but with all we've gotten in the last month or so, the weeds and wild growth will become a real fire hazard this summer. I expect this will be one of Arizona's worse fire seasons in some time. It has also caused a delay on tiling the kitchen. I've only got a few hours left to go, but can't put the saw out and make all the cuts needed.

Maybe a little cw is in order.........

Yeah, most definitely. Haven't had a chance to get out to the rain gauge yet (no fancy-ass remote reading gauge here, just a clear plastic tube with a decimal inch scale screen printed on the side) but I know it has to have rained close to two inches over the duration of the storm. That's a lot of water out of a single storm in this semi-arid part of the world.

Today it only got to 86 US, 30 Canadian. Very cloudy and some wind. However, the record high for this date was 97 US, 36.11111111111111111111 Canadian. We hit that one in 2007, so the earth is going through a cooling trend. I would imagine at this rate, we'll have lot's of snow in the next few years. I hope it's a dry snow.

We're getting a wee bit of that now. A nice gentle rain that might do some good instead of the usual downpour that all runs down the washes to Yuma. The high temp here was around 64F (17.78G) and last week we had a couple of days at 101F (38.3G).

.63" so far on my fancy new rain gauge.

It's unusually cool here for this time of year. Very low humidity and temps in the 40's overnight. And an unusual absence of the showers and thunderstorms that usually prevail in late spring. But I ain't complaining. In fact I wish it would stay like this all summer long.

Day's like this makes me really appreciate air conditioning. I am in my home office now with the air conditioning set at about 67 degrees. It is murder outside. There has been a severe thunderstorm (and now tornado) watch out all day and now it's extended till 9:000 (now 11:30) pm. Say what you want about cold weather and winter and snow. I'll take 15 deg F with snow over this crap any day. This hot/humid weather drains the life out of you. . This is some lousy weather.

Over the last 20 years, there seems to have been a change in the weather cycles.

I would say that both Summer and Winter are becoming more moderate; I remember winters in the early '90 being much colder for extended periods of time, I mean like -17 degrees in January and February. In the past five years, we've hardly had any below zero days in this area.

Used-to-be that we always had "The D'Aug Daze of Summer" that started in June, peaked in August and carried through September with +90 degree days with high humidity. It's not like that anymore; this feels like summer in Boston or the Finger Lakes area of NYS.

Because I have so many electrical devices drawing current, my utility bill is 4 times that of my next door neighbors. I have learned to suffer thru the heat until July 1st and then I install my window air conditioners which severely impact my usage of Kilo-watt hours. The air conditioners double my electric charges for the 4 months that they are installed.

With night time temperatures dropping into the high '50, so far I haven't had the need to install the window units, the ceiling fans keep it comfortable enough; this could be the "Summer W/O Air Conditioners."

There was tidal flooding in Hampton Roads area several days last week when we were in Kill Devil Hills due to the excessive rainfall. The lower tidewater is saturated now, more rain is going to cause huge problems.

Obviously, we need to accelerate our release of carbon into the atmosphere. If we're going to commit suicide, let's make it quick and painless.

We find ourselves in a no win scenario. The forecast for central Virginia is 5-7 inches of rain, starting tomorrow evening, from the nor'easter, then nobody seems to know what the idiot hurricane will do. Many models have it coming right up the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. That has the potential to be catastrophic. Our worst case scenario here in Richmond is for it to cross the outer banks. The last hurricane to actually hit Richmond was Isabel, and that was the path it took.

Of course, Virginia Beach and the mouth of the bay are barely 100 miles away. We're in deep doo-doo here...

Here is a video of a sample of what happened with NYC transit during the last Hurricane Sandy. Trains were actually lifted vie derrick and transferred to high capacity flatbed trucks to bring in shuttle service to the most devastated areas. It was brutal, time consuming and backbreaking work but the MTA managed not only to provide "rescue service" but to get lines up and running ahead of anticipated scheduling. I hope and pray that Hurricane Joachim isn't as bad as Sandy and hopefully it won't follow the same track. Still, here in the New York Metro area we are well braced for the worst. And even if it doesn't pack the punch of Sandy they say it will still cause flooding in coastal and low lying areas. That's why I am taking the time and getting prepped and ready in the event we do get a worst case scenario.

I hope not as bad. We can do without the extreme winds that were the hallmark of Sandy in my area. Nonetheless, even without major tide swells or winds the heavy rain will cause a lot of localized flooding as rivers crest and low lying land fills up with water. Still not a good thing. Hopefully after this mess we can proceed too a normal autumn and winter season. But remember, there could be more. sandy hit at the end of October into the beginning of November. The Upstate didn't get hit nearly as hard as the areas around Columbia and Charleston. The spinning action from the 2 ridges surrounding it made the whole rain track tilt from a diagonal path which lead some of it directly towards us to a horizontal path sending most of the heavier moisture south of us.

It is non event enough that Jim Cantore left Greenville yesterday and went to Charleston. Yesterday he was standing on the foot bridge in Falls Park which crosses over the Reedy River in downtown Greenville. Yeah the river looked rough but it never turned in the drama he gets paid to goo over.

We don't normally get this much water off the Atlantic. It is rare. Most of our moisture comes off the Gulf after it has run through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. You can smell the difference in the air.
Columbia and the coast will get more rain between tonight and tomorrow evening so it isn't over for them. Then consider the pattern of every river in SC. The big lakes are in the NW. They flow into rivers and creeks that all travel SE. They go directly through Columbia on a direct path to just north of Charleston. The rain may end but the rivers will continue to rise.

NC and Virginia may see some more rain through Tuesday. I can't speak to the topography in VA but in the Western North Carolina mountains one would think that flooding wouldn't be an issue and that the water would all run down to the lower areas but there are the rivers to consider. They overflow and spill out on the mountain roads often wiping them out.

Damn, had a hell of a storm go through here a little earlier today. Over an inch of rain in under 20 minutes. Needless to say, most of the driveway is near Gila Bend on its way to Yuma. We need the rain, but get little benefit from a high hard quickie like that. It sure did cool off big time. Kind of reminds me of San Diego, and there are a lot of Arizona assholes on the roads around here, too, just like SD. Who Gnu?

I remember on afternoon a severe thunderstorm, with golf ball hail and possible tornado hit us head on. Some people claim they saw a funnel but the rain was so hard that it was rain wrapped and difficult to tell if they were seeing an actual tornado or an area of extremely heavy hail and wind swept rain. Sticking my head out the door felt like you would drown as sheets of heavy wind swept rain and hail would slam you head on as if coming from all directions. It lasted about 15 minutes but in that time enough water fell from the sky to flood major roadways and flood out sections of the local railroad. About 1.5 inches of rain in 15 - 20 mins.

We got 1.13" (28.7mm) of rain out of the storm that just passed through, mostly overnight. Some pretty spectacular electrical displays as well and it was the first time the 1" capacity inner measuring tube on my rain gauge overflowed into the outer container before i could check it and dump it out.

While that might not sound like a lot of rain to most of you, keep in mind that it's over 10% of the normal annual rainfall for this area.

Here in Puerto Vallarta, I just got back from Costco, where they have a big, refrigerated walk-in room that customers enter to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. I suppose that U.S. Costco stores have the same setup. As I walked into the chilly room, it reminded me of a winter day back home ...kind of melancholic, actually. Then I stepped outside, into the 91.4F (33C) sunshine. So much for my little winter vacation.:(

After we had the warmest December since 1770, winter arrived, freezing rain, -2.7 C now more freezing rain/snow expected.
Some dips in the electricity because the high voltage lines get coated with ice and through the wind start to sway in the wind, "line dancing" and touching each other shorting out electricity for a very short moment.

Typical El Nino pattern for the West coast of North America Carl...... an oscillating jetstream we had the warmest and wettest November ever and December was going the same way until about 2 weeks before Christmas the pineapple express followed the jetstream south and now it's your turn! ....... it's been cool around here ever since with lows at night under fairly clear skies as much as -5 degrees Celsius with daytime highs barely making +3 degrees C.
We even had about 2-3 centimeters of snow last night that is melting away nicely. The weather people here are saying that things look as though we are going back to warm and wet by towards the end of January.........steadily drying out as we get towards spring and summer and warming up as well! Five inches of snow over an inch and a half of ice. Two pm yesterday it had been icing for a couple of hours when a large tree up the street came down. Eight poles in the neighborhood were replaced last night. Twelve hours without power. Twenty-nine hours without internet or even TV.

I started tuning around the FMBCB and AMBCB on a portable. Not one report of local conditions on the commercial stations. NOAA weather radio was useless in the situation as well. I would be interested in local reports and updates. Two meter repeaters were quiet. Need an updated scanner if I want to listen to public safety and work crews.

Twenty one degrees is the forecast for tonight. Thirty degrees last night in all the mess.

Forecast earlier in the week said maybe an inch.
Thursday night, we were in the "1 to 3 inches" belt.
Snow was supposed to start falling at 6 PM, then at 9 PM yesterday.
Snow started at 1 PM, very light. Really started coming down & sticking around 4 PM.
We ended up with 7 inches.
10, 15 miles South of us (KB3LIX's neck of the woods) had 18 inches, and the further South you went, the deeper it got.
10, 15 miles North of us... nothing.

An 80+ mile stretch of the Pa Turnpike was closed last night. It's still closed. Estimated 500 vehicles stranded. Several tractor trailers jackknifed, and once traffic stopped, the snow just piled on. They have no idea when they're going to get traffic moving again. Meanwhile, most of those vehicles have been stuck for over 24 hours -- no food, no water, no way off. And you figure some of them have run out of gas by now, as well...

Stuck on the westbound side is the bus carrying the Duquesne University men's basketball team home. Stuck on the eastbound side is the bus carrying the Temple University girl's gymnastics team home. Hmmmm......

We got clobbered here, with dual monitors I was watching movies on one and NWS Doppler radar on the other. I had the scanner on in the background listening to the usual stuff, nothing moving except for emergency services, even flights at Lakehurst NAS and McGuire AFB were suspended. Things are starting to move today, sort of, I heard them digging New Jersey Transit trains out in Bay Head Yard, still nothing moving at 4:00pm. Thankfully power and heat stayed on and so did cable for my Internet and TV for those easily entertained by dreck. Anything can happen here at the Jerky Shore, but I half expected power to stay on because the 27KV 3 phase atom by wire feeders are well clear of trees and I'm only a block from the substation so I expected the 4800V 3 phase secondaries to hold up, I'm glad I was right. This was a rare event here at the shoreline and I'm glad of that too, if it happened every winter I'd move to SoCal the land of fruits and nuts where I'd easily fit in the can of mixed nuts and leave the fruits to do their own thing. Floriduh has the weather but not the climate, you know what I mean. Oh, the scanner has a 12V 7.5AH gel battery on float charge so it doesn't even notice a power failure, at least I'd have had something to listen to while I froze my ass off by the light of a candle.

Then i plugged them end to end, all 96 million miles of them, tied a rock to the end and tossed it into the sun. You may now notice more "eclipses" than usual, when I key up the SUN dims!

Years ago, I had a huge hickory tree that fell into my neighbor's yard during a big storm. Fortunately, it fell in the only direction that wouldn't cause any damage. Still, my neighbors couldn't open their sliding glass door with the pressure of the tree branch tips pushing against it. I imagine that their poor dog almost had a coronary when the tree fell. The dog was on a short chain that was staked into the ground, and the massive tree came down in such a way that the "Y" of the tree trunk hit the ground on both sides of the dog. Aside from the scare, the dog was completely unharmed!
