Damp.

Almost 3" of rain over the course of the storm. Keep in mind that the average yearly rainfall for this place is 10".

Last month we got a month's worth of rain twice, 10 days apart. Today we are once again receiving a nearly a month's worth.

We’re over 135% of our average rainfall so far this season, with more on the way over the weekend. That’s two wet winters in a row. All the reservoirs are at capacity and there’s a good snowpack in the Sierra Nevada, something that’s uncommon for California.

I don't have any statistics for this, but it certainly does seem that we here in the (rain) forest are running a little behind in the water aspect this year again. Things are changing and it isn't hard to see if one is paying attention.

We're in our usual springtime pattern of persistent low clouds and cool temperatures (currently 60°F), known locally as “May Gray” and "June Gloom." This bothers the tourists, who come here for warm sunny beach weather, but residents don’t mind since we know that it will eventually give way to “July Fry.”

WZ7U
05-15-2024, 03:31 PM
I only come down to the metropolis in Dec/Jan., for that exact reason. July Fry? Lol. It's hot here then too, so why bother?

Friends in Norco/Corona areas. Christmas is a great holiday in Socal.

Considering a summer home in VK, since their weather in QLD is similar to what a nice winter break in LA provides. Yeah, when that lottery ticket pays off.

Oh, back to topic. Low 70's today with partly cloudy periods. Just in time to finish moving 50 bales of hay to the belly bunker

Summer has arrived and the heat wave leakage that has traveled north up from that powerful heat dome over California has been cooking us up for the last few days. Temperatures getting into the low 30 degrees Celsius mark in record temperature territory, but still not anywhere near the Temps of our own heat dome hell of 3 years ago where we hit the unheard of temperature of 43 degrees C! Climate change is so wonderous!! :fever:

Hot as bawlz but feels hotter. Had a massive thunderstorm Sunday. Dropped 2 inches of rain in the first hour and then it went on and off through the night until early morning daylight. Ground is still soaked in some places and the humidity is still high as a result.

It's hard to get comfortable since dealing with covid last March. My main post covid issue is having a lower body temperature, 96.3. In cooler months it is hardly noticeable and all I wear are long pants, a t-shirt and a windbreaker type of jacket while it's 30º outside. In this instance low and mid 90º temps feel like the Summer of 2012 when it stayed above 100º for a long stretch. Some days even reached into 104º through most of July. Stepping outside felt like walking into a blast oven. At that time though it was very dry and even riding the scooter I had literally felt like going through a furnace.

My last post covid body temperature symptoms lasted almost a year as my nominal temp gradually started to get back to normal. I expect a similar outcome this time but who knows, honestly. I think I'd be OK with 88º but that isn't the norm for our area anymore as we go through consistent days in the mid 90's and nights in the mid 70's ... and no breeze.

It could be worst but I don't think this area could handle it because of all the new housing and apartments since people have been flocking to the area over the years. Daily gridlocked traffic is the norm now. We're putting more strain on the power grid. The only positive thing I've seen are more small solar farms along the highways. This is being done despite the protests and complaints of the locals. When you see memes on the internet of someone claiming that solar attracts more sunlight and makes the area hotter, yeah, that originated from my area.

Back to the Weather. Another problem with the higher temps is how it affects the afternoon thunderstorm formation. If it's too hot, it looks like the thunder clouds are building and just about to turn darker but then they stop and it's just clouds. They can't seem to build the tops of those clouds so they are short and for reasons of Science that I can't explain here the clouds just stay that way and float away never dropping rain before they eventually dissipate into the late evening.
I'm sure I could look that up but I think most here understand or have experienced the same thing, well at least in the mid Atlantic and Southeastern US.

yesterday we had *three* tornadoes touch down in neighboring counties ... local high was 97 degrees. walking into the hallway (in my apartment building) is unpleasant. the storm that did pass by passed *near* (but not over) the city, so we just got light rain instead of 70mph winds.

tomorrow should be 85ish?

The marine layer has been unusually persistent this summer.

Every spring, we get what’s known locally as "May Gray" and "June Gloom": low clouds and cool temperatures caused by warm, moist air passing over the cold California Current just offshore and which really pisses of the touristas who come here expecting nice warm beach weather.

It's usually gone by the last week of June but it’s hung around into mid-July this year.

Sunday and Monday are supposed to get up to 97. Originally they said 99 and I was like whoa whoa whoa. No. No. No.
I spoke with the NWS and had them make some changes but they have to give up a little bit more. 95 for Sunday and Monday should be the max and the rain for Friday, that needs to arrive by Tuesday.
So I'm going to call them up again and see what I can do.

Ha ha ha ha, not really brother Ash. That's a big reason why we chose to remain out in the rain forest.

In '05, a couple years into her cancer when I was still 18 wheel mobile, I took her on a tour of the US because she wanted to see what's out there in our wonderful land. She had never been out of the PNW except for a road trip to NE, and wondered if it was any "better" out "there".
The humidity of the SE was a hard no. The density of the NE was another hard no. The heat of the SW is a hard no too. The middle has facets of all those other places, so a soft no, but no nevertheless. So we stayed here. Like the saying goes, someone has to do it.

.02" precip sounds like the ice layer on an efficient air conditioner condenser

What it actually is is what happens when your weather station uses something called a haptic rain gauge — “haptic” in this case meaning it senses rainfall by the vibrations caused by impact of the drops on the top of the unit — and you forget to move it when you’re running a palm sander nearby.

Once it showed like 2" of rain in the middle of a typically dry SoCal summer day for the same reason. The XYL always forgets to move the thing when she’s refinishing brightwork.

BTW, if anyone is interested in what the weather is doing in this neck of the woods, you can access the info from my little weather station here:

Wednesday we were warned about possible 4 to 7 inches of rain. By late Thursday it was downgraded to 2 inches. Later Thursday it became evident that we would only see sprinkles if anything.
The storm which hit the the Gulf took a slight NNW path instead of veering E. Today it is cloudy due to another storm which has been coming in from the Atlantic with the bulk of it moving NW having been over Raleigh NC yesterday.
Currently it is cloudy and 73º, humidity 75%, pressure 30.1".
