Pictures.
the last thing on my mind was pictures My main concern was getting onto solid ground so I could dig out paths to the doors and lower floor windows. I know what I saw so you'll have to take my word on it. When it happens again this year I'll try and get some pictures. Even getting to the basement during a blizzard is dangerous here as you have to go outside to access the basement door. I usually take a guide rope because it is too easy to get lost out there with 0 visibility, driving snow and sudden drifts which could catch you and bury you in a second.

Well, it warmed up a little today so it could snow. It's a really dry, fluffy snow - very high air to water content, due to the low temperatures. Driving is an adventure because the fine powdery snow makes traction interesting. It's fun to watch cars at stoplights as they spin their wheels when the light changes.

Yesterdays high, 17oF (-8oC), Snow 10-12" here on the mountainside with a coating of ice on top and on the bottom.
37oF (3oC) today, plummeting down to 8oF (-13oC) by Monday.
Oh, yeah. More snow Tuesday... Winter's here and it looks like a white Christmas.
Add about 7-8" more to that total as of today. Snow accumulations are about 14-16" (36-41cm) right now. A bit less in the valleys.

Traditionally we'd get some really cold days in December, 7 to 14 of them. Last year December was cold. January and February were warm and March was Quite Frigid and stayed that way until near the 3rd week of April. By May it was full blown Summer.
So, it's a tossed salad as to what to expect. We could get that snowy dip in Jan-Feb OR Mar.

No pictures needed. I know what I saw. Expecting a major thaw and return to summer temps for a few days. Will likely be followed by a sudden cool down resulting in yet another bout of high winds, thunderstorms, tornadoes followed by heavy snow and ice squalls.

Well, for the first day of winter, NYC will be 70 or so. We'll hit 66 here. Then, if the Weather Channel is right, we'll get one of those epic storms that you normally see around March. It will have torrential rains and winds.

The weather over the next few days/week will be severe. We are going from arctic cold to tropic summer in a matter of hours. torrential rains, high winds and near tropical heat wave and hurricane conditions are headed our way possibly followed by blasts of winter cold resulting in severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and derecho gust lines. I am bracing for the worst. We might see a wave before this is all over.

It started off quite cold here around Thanksgiving.and continued on into december. Then a couple weeks ago it got warm and I was even running the air conditioner. Then it got cold again. Now it's about 9 deg F outside with complete white out conditions. You can't see an inch in front of you and snow is piling up fast in the face of extremely heavy wind gusts causing huge drifts. "Friend of mine in Brooklyn called earlier. It is even more severe there. Already 2-3 feet of snow and piling up blocking doorways with cross winds in excess of 90."
Brooklyn is a notoriously tough borough, but it's the wind driven drifts that piled up that deep and the wind didn't reach 90mph gusts. The weather services said differently, somebody is exaggerating. Here the day after with the wind calmed down and snow tapering off we got a few inches with mild drifts. The plows are out as are a few brave souls, I'm hibernating in my bear cave with no plans to forage for food for the time being with temperatures cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.
Get your minds out of the gutter, a brass monkey was the rack that held cannonballs on a British Man O' War. Iron and brass have different temperature coefficients, so the iron shrank more than the brass and the balls fell out. That's the best time to attack, when the sailors are running around chasing their balls. (Maybe I should take my own advice?)

Sounds like you guys are getting an extended version of American style weather. We seem (so far) to be having a cool winter relative to this area of southeast NY. I don;t mind it, in fact I prefer it to hot humid summer or mild springlike crap.I was outside before, it was 10 degrees and I felt comfortable. Mostly the case if the USA./Canada has a cold spell we get the wet depressions and warm weather in winter...saves on the heating bills though..
But we have this for months now, i wouldn't mind some winter here myself, but the expectations are we keep this sh*t up to the end of January at least...

Wrapping pipes in freeze prone locations with electric heat tape and covering it with insulation will prevent it. http://www.homedepot.com/b/Plumbing-Pipe-Insulation/N-5yc1vZbuy9 As a stopgap measure leaving the water trickling will help, still water freezes before moving water. Where you're concerned, do what my landlord tells complainers running around in their underwear, put on some clothes.

Actually a Cheechako is an old name for a newcomer, a tenderfoot in Northern Alaska and northwestern Canada. Most seasoned old timers would consider 10 degrees to be pretty mild for winter. Heck, 10 degrees is even considered a typical winter temperature in the Adirondacks in upstate New York where you'll often get overnight temperatures of -10 , -20, and lower.
And regardless of how cold it gets one thing for sure. The river near me at my present locale in southeast NY won't freeze because its so damned polluted. At most it will develop a yellow waxy coating over it's surface. Years ago a few cold days and people could ice skate on it. These days you can get a months worth of arctic weather and that river will remain liquid. It's actual name is the "Bronx River". I have dubbed it "the river that cannot freeze".

True. We had a lot the year that temps were in the 40s most of the winter. Up in the Adirondacks where this is the norm, those bugs can't be stopped if there was a nuclear war.
Good news. We bottomed out at -9. Beats -15 anytime. I think.

But the most wild, variable weather I experienced was at Holy Loch, Scotland. While waiting in formation (at ease) on the pier for the bus to take us to the airport, we had rain, then warm sun, then a snow squall, then a thunderstorm, cold, fog, back to sun, all within 1 hour.

No, the reason they're in Quartzsite is to get a good place to park their RV for that goddamned Gemboree that they have every year.

This is how I remember winter being when i was a youngster. Except back then it usually stayed cold longer and there was more snow. Then everyone got spoiled by all the mild-warm snow and ice free winters we had back to back year after year. A lot of the old time Adirondackers say that winters up there in the mountains were rougher than nowadays. And even some Alaskan's and Yukon'rs are saying the same thing. Of curse one would have to examine the stats to be certain as people don't always remember things exactly as they were. Then again, considering climate change it is possible they are right.

I remember those days with my neighbor (truck driver) in Dayton, Ohio. I use to help him warm up his truck in a store parking lot in sub-zero weather. We used a charcoal grill without legs. On Sunday Morning we built a nice hot charcoal fire then slid it underneath the engine. By Sunday night he was off and running.
My waterlines froze this morning. Apparently Virginia houses aren't built for single digit temps. I just put the space heater in my water closet. Hope the water comes back on before the wife wakes up.

Things are a bit different today. My bunk heater on this truck actually has a small furnace in it that runs the truck coolant through it. As long as I have battery power, I can run the bunk heater which keeps the block sorta warm. Not HOT but warm enough so theres no problem cold starting the truck. For those times when I am home and not running the bunk heater, I have a 120v AC plug in for the electric block heater. I have yet to use it though
My waterlines froze this morning. Apparently Virginia houses aren't built for single digit temps. I just put the space heater in my water closet. Hope the water comes back on before the wife wakes up.
I grew up in Central NY about halfway between Albany and Binghamton. Our house had a hot water circulation system though the baseboard system. EVERY winter we had at LEAST 1 pipe freeze and burst somewhere on an outside wall. It was a real PITA. We tried running electric pipe heating wrapping everywhere but it never was enough. I was so glad when we moved out of that house even though I was a kid. The one thing I do miss about that sort of system is the sounds the radiators made when the hot water started running through them. The radiators attached to the piping was a series of fins and it would pop and ping and make all kinds of noise when it started reacting to the heat. I kinda miss that.
Colder then a mother's -in-law kiss here, and it's going to get colder yet.
I never met my mother in law. I heard she was ok.

It's 10 and dropping with wind chill -4. By morning they expect 7 with a chill of -10. If I were outside I wouldn't be talking about the weather, or anything for that matter.
Once upon a time due to circumcisions beyond my control I was stranded 120mi away from home and it wasn't even this cold. I had to hitch hike (when it as fairly safe and legal) along a county road and the 2 or 3 cars out at that late hour passed me by. I finally reached a diner, staggered in, sat at the counter and TRIED to order a coffee to warm me... mumble mmmffft mumumffff. I pointed to a cup, she smiled, brought it and thankfully paid having warmed and continued on my way. Shortened for brevity, when I reached New Brunswick, NJ, after waiting for morning in the station I finally made it home to Rahway by a Pennsylvania Railroad local for fans out there, warm milk this time and bed, I don't think I ever fell asleep that fast.
Take winter weather, especially wind chill warnings seriously, you may live to regret ignoring them, then maybe you won't live.

I'm not ABOUT to leave my bear cave to look at rime ice on the beach pretty as it may be or the frozen Inland Waterway. I'll forage for food when absolutely necessary and not a New York minute before!
I've got the Accuweather weather bug on my Firefox toolbar that generally agrees with the NWS Mount Holly, NJ site I have bookmarked. Present conditions come from Belmar-Farmingdale Airport a few miles to the north and forecast from the NWS office in Philadelphia. The same local conditions and forecast plus marine are broadcast on 146.450Mhz from a nearby firehouse in the Herbertsville section of Brick Township so I'm never out of touch with Gaia should the need arise.
As expected in this frigid weather, the Point Pleasant Fire Department is responding to a report of a burst water heater. Of all the bad luck to have one flame out and freeze. There are reports of water leaks coming in from all over, never a dull moment when you have a scanner.

I heard the bloviated balloon making this rant. Apparently Oxycontin Fatso doesn't understand that global climate and regional weather are two different things. Or more likely he does understand it but wants to intentionally mislead the uneducated fools who comprise his audience. Secondly, the term "polar vortex" is anything but new. It has been known of and used by meteorologists and climatologists for ages. However, i doubt that Oxycontin fatso (aka "The Ballooon") is aware of that. In any event its typical of The Balloon to mock science to further his agenda and continue misleading the dittoheads.
BTW when it comes to weather notice these talking heads like Oxycontin Fatso who deny climate change only seem to notice cold weather. But they conveniently never notice long protracted record breaking heatwaves and droughts.

Nope, new polar vortex is on it's way for the USA.
http://www.theatlanticcities.com/politics/2014/01/polar-vortex-returns-next-week/8135/
However, during the third and fourth weeks of January, some changes will take place. The high amplitude pattern is forecast to get more extreme. The polar vortex will move farther south and get stronger. The pattern will gradually change the current mixture of Pacific and Arctic air in the Canada Prairies and the North Central U.S. to all Arctic air. The air will get significantly colder over the Canada Prairies and the much of the eastern half of the nation as a result.
http://cdn.theatlanticcities.com/img/upload/2014/01/17/252d39fd9.jpg
If the early forecasts are right the sequel will be even worse, just like at the movies. "Temperatures may get colder than they were during the initial polar vortex event," writes The Houston Chronicle's Alex Sosnowski (http://blog.chron.com/weather/2014/01/polar-vortex-part-two-country-faces-another-arctic-outbreak-to-end-january/#19480101=0). These frigid temperatures are not a sure thing just yet. Predicting the weather is not a perfect science, especially when guessing so far away. But we know that Tuesday will be very, very cold, and all of the patterns point towards another Polar Vortex-type deep freeze.
We still don't know how far south the Vortex will travel. For now, most expect the Vortex to affect the Mid-West and north eastern parts of the country.
What makes this Polar Vortex sequel even more fun dangerous than the last one is the increased possibility of snowstorms. "This is the most favorable pattern for snow that we’ve had all winter and it’s occurring right at the beginning of the period when snowstorms are most frequent climatologically," says the Post. "But it still is not a perfect pattern." Someone get a pot of boiling water ready.
Looks if that happens we won't be getting any winter this year, just west circulation and more storms...

It's 28 here and I doubt it will go up any higher. If anything the temps will start falling off rapidly. Monday next week we are supposed to see 33 but then a rapid drop off. Actually this weather really doesn't bother me, in fact I've been quite comfortable both indoors and outdoors. It was a little brutal when I went out to plow the snow this past Wednesday morning as it was only 6 deg and a fierce wind was blowing and I was getting clobbered by blowing snow... frostbite time. But once I went inside, got my hat, scarf, and my blood got circulating good and got back out and I felt fine. Matter of fact by the time I was done and ready to head inside I felt warm despite the fact that it was only a few degrees above zero.

I would, and Carlo probably would as well, be willing to swap a few degrees for a few inches of precip. It's been pretty dry for quite some time, and even worse in S CAl. In the past few years, I've seen several mini-sink holes showing up around the property here due to a heavy burden on the ground water table, and lack of replenishment.

We are just a couple degrees above that at the moment. Yeah, we could use that much water, as well. But we need it slow. Last time we got a couple inches of rain, it came down so fast, that most of it ended up in the Imperial Valley, or further South down into Mexico.

Oh, certainly. I marched in the 1969 St. Patrick's Day Parade here in NYC. It was 35, snowing with a northwest wind blowing at some Godforbiddinglycold speed across the plains of Central Park and right through me for three and a half hours. It was then that I understood why the Irish drink on St. Patrick's Day.
Still, it was 52 two days later while I fought off the chill. Last week 35 would be the warm number and in two days it would be 3.

Hit 5 right now. Will warm up then drop for the coming snowstorm. We were supposed to get an inch, no more then we actually had very rough driving with about 5" of snow; must be the cutbacks, that is a very odd thing to happen in the mountains. Tonight more of the same, 12 to 15" predicted and got a public alert via Google about an hour ago.
Can't wait for the wearing of the green. Then again, we got snowed in on Easter 1970 (http://thetimes-tribune.com/news/the-year-bunny-was-snowed-in-1.1296788) when I was visiting up here. The storm that came in late March dumped 42" after five 60 degree days... NYC got 4". Meh. Why Not?

By the weekend he'll be crab food. The LIRR has it's usual problems, service has been suspended on the NEC and the North Jersey Coast Line from Long Branch northward giving Amtrak and NJT fits with ice loading on the overhead catenaries. No mention has been made of Diesel service on the Bay Head Shuttle, Bay Head to Hoboken or non electrified NJT lines. I haven't checked but it's safe to assume information may be had on their web sites.

That winter storm map was copyright 2010 and fits this weekend's forecast. OK, call it climate change, but wasn't 2010 the year of global warming? Hmmm. Another hmmm, "prolongation of new depressions"
has a double meaning here, weather and "the winter blues". Can't do anything about the weather, but those blues can be chased away in a brightly lit room since they're brought on by low light levels in the gloom of winter. Yep, a population rise around Halloween is pre dick ted since there's nothing else and certainly nothing better to do than provide better home entertainment than a DC to light, QRP to QRO ham shack. Of course snow and subfreezing temperatures is enjoyable, even if you're not surrounded by snow bunnies in bikinis dry snow is easier to deal with than heavy wet slop.
Having spent my life in New Jersey I'm used to this time of year with yo yo weather. It's a bit inconvenient dealing with alternating clear and rainy/snowy days, but as long as I can take advantage of the breaks to run errands it's no tragedy. Tomorrow, Thursday is one of those days I can come out to forage and back to a weekend of hibernation and if the rest of the country should follow Colorado it'll be a higherbernation.

With me it's just the opposite. I prefer the short days and longer nights. When it's cool and dark I am calm. When the days are long and it's hot I get both depressed and quite irritable.

I've got one. On a hot day it will get the inside temp to around 75 degrees which is still too warm IMHO. If I leave it on overnight and the temp at night drops enough it will get the room down to about 68-69 by morning. Now, if it could get me down to 68 or so during the day I'd be happy. getting a larget unit isnt going to get the room much cooler either. Ity would simply waste energy. The only real way to get it cooler on very hot days would be to design your how along the lines of a cold storage warehouse.... with about 2 feet of insulation along the walls , floors, and ceilings and removing all windows.
Besides, air conditioners don't make the day's shorter. But at least it makes it a bit cooler.

Keep an eye as to what happens down here and multiply by 10. They claim the SHEET sleet, snow, and ice are going to be a doozy. Starting after midnight tonight and going until Thursday. We're doomed. LOL
Good luck with the ice. All they need to do is get some sand down and watch everyone drive as if it's still glare ice. Looks like Snowmaggedon for Atlanta again.

Sorry.
Ratz. It was -11ºF (-24ºC) here this morning. And that's probably balmy compared to West of the Appalachians.

Okay, we got 4 to 8 inches of snow. Then it abruptly changed to rain creating a heavy, hard packed slippery slushy snow. Cleanup was rough. The 7hp snow thrower could barely handle this heavy stuff and the chute kept getting clogged causing the machine to conk out,. I had to clear the chute and restart close to a dozen times just to get the place plowed out. Now comes the groovy part. When it gets down below freezing and all that nice stuff and rain glazes over to form nice slippery ice.
BTW I refer to these types of storms as "Verge Storms" because they are constantly on the verge of snow, sleet, rain. Earlier this winter we got true snow storms... nice light white flaky snow. Easy to clear. This stuff we are getting now sucks.

One more bit of proof the old reliable snow shovel is best and always works where these newfangled contraptions that only work in dry powder piss you off.

Sunny start of the day here in the Netherlands, 3 C expecting 7 C but in the evening back to rain and wind up to 60 miles per hour.
Tomorrow storm 21 or so since December, rain 10 C and 65 to 70+ miles per hour wind, wind dying down tomorrow night 1/2 inch rain expected.
Rest of the week calmer and less windy temps around 8 to 10 C.
What winter?????

It's been a relatively quiet year as far as our legendary coastal gales go, now I know where they got off to. Since you're seeing so many I wouldn't be surprised you see this one.
