Here in Ft.Myers, I am just able to stick my head out. We had many tornados, and waterspouts spin up and made it several miles inland. Lots of damage everywhere. I have power, trees down, bedlam. We will be back to mid 70's and blue skies in a few hours. I hope the pool is open lol.

I drank an entire pot of coffee watching this on radar, tv, out the window....I'm learning what living bicycle distance from the beach (which I've yet to visit, yeah, residents rarely visit theme parks and beaches for some reason)

Here is the edge of the winter storm down here

I'm watching the local TV news. Yes, the weather is the lead story. I heard the words," wind chill factor" which I really didn't think I'd hear again for a local forecast. They spent a minute demonstrating how to defrost your car windows, which is a legal requirement to drive on the streets. My neighbors were wearing coats this morning, and it was 55°F when I took my stroll in shorts and shirt. I haven't been here long enough apparently.

May Day, 1 May is a day we can all dance around the may pole and celebrate the demise of Old Man Winter. I'm not folnd of cold at all, and this rollercoaster weather drives me nuts not knowing WHAT to expect. That having been said, Charles, you being our barman should have quite a collection of beer cans by now. Forget recycling, there's no money in it compared to what you can get by saving turning your yard and those of grateful neighbors int EPA Superfund sites that will never get cleaned up. Tremley Point, Linden, N.J. has been on the list for decades after being abandoned by American Cyanamid. Afriend who worked there reported men working in the dye room peed colors. https://darrp.noaa.gov/hazardous-waste/american-cyanamid
Rant mode off.

Here's the best way to rid the area of fire ants and make money doing it, first it requires a small investment in a furnace and crucible to melt down those beer cans and aluminium scrap, tongs, welder's gloves, and safety equipment like an apron and face shield in case of spattering. You can read directions on the Internet, You Tube has some great videos, soon you'll be casting fire ant colonies like the pros and selling the casts as art.

Oh, while you're immolating ants I'll be watching some really great ant movies in my video library like Phase IV, Empire Of The Ants, my favorite, Them! and an episode of The Outer Limits, The Zanti Misfits. Now be careful when you're building the small dam around the colony entrance, these are NOT the kind you would want for ants in your pants!

A little about South Carolina geography and history here with regard to "the fall line." The fall line runs through the center of the state from the southwest to the northeast. It's where the elevation drops. In Columbia SC is where the Broad River and Saluda River converge to make the Congaree River. Pictured below. Link to geography lesson below that.

Windy today. 20 mph gusts and about 63º. Looking at the cloud map, the edge of Ian's bands extend past Columbia SC, center of the state, reaching the halfway point between my location and Columbia. I keep feeling like it will go northeast with a more easterly heading while the maps say north with only a slight easterly heading. I may head up to a high vantage point to see if I can view any of the bands as the sun sets. It will be a trick. There is one place I may be able to see the light from the setting sun hit the edge of the bands to the east and south.

As I was hoping, the brunt of it, the center of the storm veered further east. Myrtle Beach sustained some damage which may or may not have been overstated by the media. In 2005 I noted that the sewer lines, storm drains and water lines run way too close together. One morning I was on the beach for sunrise pictures and there was a hole big enough to walk through where the storm water drains on to the actual beach itself. With a flashlight I could see everything I just described and of course, the sewage pipes were seeping sewage. A couple of years after that bacteria and the illness it caused was being reported as people were getting sick from going to the beach. Not once did anyone ever openly admit it was caused by deteriorating underground infrastructure via the storm drain exits. People getting sick continued to be reported over the years since but they blamed the ocean water.

When it gets into the high 60's/low 70's with this kind of humidity and you've already been on the adjusting end of the cooler weather it makes it feel downright stuffy and there's nothing you can do about it except turn on the air or go for a ride.

So, Thursday was a bunch of rain and Friday was just that warm stuffy weather without a lot of air movement. Currently I have 64º. Forecast high is 71º and the morning low will PLUNGE down to 37º ... and I'll have to start over with getting back on the cooler game page. Planned to go sailing today and, of course, there was not a breath of wind. At least, not until after 14:00, too late to go out on these short days. The sun sets early here because we're so far east in the Pacific Time Zone (almost due south of Boise, ID, which is in Mountain Time).

So I worked on the boat instead. New switch and panel for the bilge pump, installed reefing nettles in the mainsail, lubed the mainsail track, rove a new main sheet with some really pretty blue 3/8" polyester double-braid and a bunch of general clean-up. Productive day.

Different species. What you’re catching is the Pacific halibut, which don’t range this far south. What we catch down here is the California halibut which is smaller but meaner, with nasty sharp teeth. There is a running joke in places where you can catch both species:

Q: How can you tell the difference between a Pacific halibut and a California halibut?

A: Stick your finger in its mouth. If you get it back, it’s not a California halibut.

Beat the storm today coming back from Atlanta but while I did my paperwork in Greenville it arrived.
It rained so hard on the way home I was going 5 mph with my hazards on and leaning forward as if was going to help me see better through the windshield.
A car was in my lane headed towards me as I approached downtown. I'm sure they had no idea what lane they were in. Fortunately I had a lane to my right to swing over to and go around them.
The windshield wipers on high could not keep up and passing under a street light made it beyond impossible to see the road. Then suddenly it stopped and there was a river running through the road draining from everything and everywhere.

Looks like it’s going to be an exciting weekend. The National Hurricane Center has issued it’s first-ever tropical storm warning for Southern California.

Put the weather channel on a little earlier and was impressed with the projected track of something that doesn't happen very often. The actual fuck indeed. I have people in Riverside and Norco/Corona.

Hope all fares well. I can't imagine riding it out on the boat.

What usually wrecks boats during hurricanes is storm surge. There is expected to be little or no storm surge associated with Hilary. It doesn’t hurt that the lowest atmospheric pressure will hit us right a low tide tomorrow morning.

What's the almanac say for this Winter? For my area, the SE, I pretty much agree. I can't speak to other areas which I do not have a "feel" for.
Chime in with your opinions for your areas and your ... "feels."

Region 1: Northeast — “The snowiest stretches occur in mid-to late November, mid-December and early to mid-January,” the Almanac says. Overall, the temps appear to be tracking above normal, with chilly spurts in mid- to late November, early to mid-January, and early to mid-February.

Region 2: Atlantic Corridor — Snowfall is expected to be 2 to 3 inches above monthly averages, with the snowiest parts of the season at the tail end of December, late January, and mid-February. Temperatures should be above normal, except for a cold spell from late January to the middle of February.

Region 3: Appalachians — You may notice above-normal overall precipitation and snowfall, however. As far as the mercury levels, they are on track to be just below average.

Region 4: Southeast — While it’s unlikely to be a white Christmas, it might be a wet one, folks! Overall precipitation rates seem higher than usual, as do temps, which are expected to be mild and slightly above normal.

Region 5: Florida — Wet and mild rules the day for most of the state (except the dryer south). Snowbirds will be happy to hear that Florida’s winter temps are anticipated to be milder than usual this year.

Region 6: Lower Lakes — North of I-90, Santa might bring you a white Christmas! Beyond that, the snowy, colder-than-average periods are expected for late January through mid-February.

Region 7: Ohio Valley — With a wetter and colder than usual winter on the horizon, residents can look forward to a snowy week around Hanukkah and Christmas. “The coldest spells will occur in late December, early January, and late January through mid-February,” the authors say.

Region 8: Deep South — Get your rain boots ready; you’ll need them for much of the wet and mild yet colder-than-common season. The chilliest times are forecasted for late December, early and late January, as well as early February.

Region 9: Upper Midwest — Go ahead and start dreaming of a white Christmas, because the authors claim that this is one of the few regions that is expected to entirely be treated to a fluffy, white gift on December 25. Winter temps are anticipated to be below normal, especially during the second half of November, the majority of December, the start and end of January, and early February. Snowfall is also expected to be above normal rates.

Region 10: Heartland — Keep that scarf handy. The forecast for this region includes colder than normal climate. You can also anticipate a white Christmas, with winter’s snowy peak from late December to mid-January.

Region 11: Texas-Oklahoma — With just a bit more precipitation and temps leaning ever so colder in the north but warmer in the south, conditions are looking about on par for the course in these states.

Region 12: High Plains — Precipitation and snowfall will be a bit higher than most years, and “it will be extra cold,” the Almanac explains, with the glacial temps foreshadowed for late November, late December, and early to mid-January.

Region 13: Intermountain — Who’s ready for some soup? Temps are prophesied to be an estimated 4° F below average, and “we’re looking at above-normal snowfall. The snowiest periods will be in mid- to late November, early and late January, and mid-February,” the authors claim. “Expect a white Christmas!”

Region 14: Desert Southwest — In parts of this region that typically receive snow, folks can await more flakes than normal, with the snowiest times during the second half of January and mid-February. Temps will be cooler than usual, especially in late November, at the start and end of December, and throughout late January.

Region 15: Pacific Northwest — Although this region is known for its frequently dreary conditions, residents can look forward to a colder yet drier-than-normal winter. The coldest weeks will fall in mid-November, late December, and mid-January.

Region 16: Pacific Southwest — It’s going to be a wet, stormy, and cold season, with the most precip predicted during early and late January, early to mid-February, and mid-March.

Region 17: Alaska — With a white Christmas and snowier-than-usual season ahead, you may guess that it will also be a frigid season. But the Almanac claims that temps should be about 4° F above average.

Region 18: Hawaii — Rainy and mild is the M.O. for the islands, the Almanac predicts. “Expect the stormiest periods in early November in the east and early January and mid-February.”

Not a bad guess on the Pacific Southwest since there’s an strong El Niño forming right now. That generally (but not always) leads to a wet winter in central to southern California. Typically not a cold one, though.

Las relative warm week ahead 20 C daytime, around 14 C nights dry first, later more rain showers possible, temps going back to 14 C daytime.
Winter comes though last 10 winters were more prolongated autumns.
Which is good for a low heating bill....

Except for a couple weeks worth of record heat, this was a very pleasant summer here in CN86jc this last year.

It depends on whether they’re metric futtons or imperial futtons.

Big rain is supposed to hit here again by Thursday. Should be exciting, after last week's floods.
