Been in the high 80s here for about a week. Hit 82 day before yesterday. About a 50 degree swing from sunrise until around 2pm or 3pm. I guess it's good for the big golfing whoop de doo going on in Scottsdale. The usually have to delay the start until the frost melts, and/or it rains it out for a few days.

Temps in the high sixties with northeast winds predicted for tomorrow. In other words, perfect sailing conditions. I should be able to make it all the way under the Coronado Bridge to downtown San Diego on one close-hauled tack, then turn around and sail all the way home on a beam reach.

About the weather. Well, after an extremely mild winter with virtually no snow, ice or even cool weather winter has finally decided to arrive in the middle of March in spring.. Bout 15 degrees right now, coldest it's been all year. The snow from yesterday is still around and staying solidly frozen. But the big one hits Monday night and Tuesday with plenty of heavy snow and subfreezing temps. So, I guess I can say we did get winter after all. It just took till spring to get here.

Usually it does turn green, but it happens later, usually towards the end of April. Normally, the wild grass and weeds don't last very long, either. With all the rain we've had lately, it's brought up weeds I've never seen before, And, usually the weeds don't get very tall during years of normal rainfall.

We still have a major blizzard on tap for Tuesday with heavy snow, whiteout conditions, and high winds raging up to and over 50-60 mph creating massive snow drifts. It's supposed to start Monday night after midnight and continue through Tuesday night into Wednesday where it will taper down into snow showers followed by continued subfreezing temps and possibly more snow on Saturday. It's wild its like winter is catching up for what it missed in spring... Assuming this blizzard does materialize as expected it will be 2.5 -3 days later than the famous March blizzard of 1888 that literally buried New York City in well over 50 inches of snow and massive snow drifts. Actually this blizzard will overlap the blizzard of 1888 since the 1888 storm ran from March 11-14 and this storm March 13-15. The 1888 blizzard came after a bout of very mild weather, very similar to this oncoming storm.

Since I have to get all my Tuesday m,orning business on Monday I'm going to try and stop at a small auto supply store and see if he might have a replacement belt. Even if its not the same exact size or fit just so long as it will drive the auger so i can use it to plow out the driveway, walk, etc. If not then I'll just hire some kids to shovel the place out and I'll fix the snow thrower for next season... assuming there is a next season.

Well, to be honest I much prefer the snow and the cold of winter over the heat and humidity of summer. For me summer is the least comfortable of of all the seasons. The heat, the humidity, the constant sweating, the prevalence of biting insects, etc. My future plans for a move up to Alaska or the Canadian Yukon. Leaving New York City behind won't be easy as it's my home from birth but I think I can manage it. Besides I can always come down this way for a rare visit.

Normal room temperature here is anything between 16 to 18 C in winter, i like it that way.
Othere keep it between 20 -22C but for me that is much too hot.
Saves on the heating bill as well.

Summer is fine as long the temps don't go to far over 20 - 22 C, the odd heatwave we have runing up to 35 C is much too ht for me, sea climate makes it humid as well, except if the wind comes over land from Germany, the east.

I don't like winter for the snow, scraping car windows, slippery roads, for the rest there are clothes.
In summer i stay in the shade, or look for the colder inside, fans etc.
Though it is a good time to repair/build up new antenna's...

n2ize

Typical summer here is temps in the 80's and 90's every day with high humidity, Feels like you are drowning in hot water out there,I can't stand it. Also power outages are more frequent during heat spells so you can be without power, no air condiioning, no fans for hours in blazing heat and humidity. The only cool thing about summer are the thunderstorms, which seem to have become rare lately.

Luckily we don't do power out's, in the 30 years in this house i had one, lasting all of 1 hour because a power transformer house blew up.
Once the main cable underground to my house leaked, water came in the cable there was a thud, and the lights dimmed and electric was restored, they replaced the cable next day.

The house is fully isolated, double bricked walls with isolation between the walls, double glazing all around, floor isolation etc.
That keeps the house relative cool for the first week of a heat wave, if it lasts longer i douse the outside wall in the evening with water a few times, that evaporates the water and the warm brick walls cool off.
Keeping the sun out of the house as well.

Fans do the rest.

What is interesting it's not really planning to warm up anytime soon as we have more snow on tap for Saturday and possibly next Thursday as well. The odd part is that this is all following a ridiculously mild winter season. It's like in came spring and winter is trying to make up for lost time. I need to get my bike out. Been saving my raisins and nuts to have it lowered. Last year I sanded and coated the fairings with spray on rubber. May do that again if they have better looking coatings this year. I want to ditch the pointy nose and go with a couple of big ole bug eye headlights and a windshield and brace that I made. The left lens is made of LEDs on a bulb base that I made after it burned out the incandescent filaments. Hi/Lo tested. After removing the old (pointy) assembly I'll have a couple of extra sockets for more lights to deal with. Be great for a pair of wide beam curb illuminators.

Mid June through early August was dry with a respite for 10 days in August. From that point on until November it was bone, I MEAN BONE DRY and we had fires unlike anything we've ever had. No fire management has ever been done here like they do out West so once it started it took off like a powder keg. Most years you could go anywhere and uncover a layer of leaves and the ground would be moist. Hiking in the mountains you could see where people had dug in with their boots and the top layer would slip revealing dark, organic mud less than an inch deep.
This year so far it has been wet but in Anderson county they are keeping Hartwell artificially low because of politics and the way they make money on crying "drought."

That is a bummer. But out here in the peoples republic of Oregon, fire management is as far as I can see non existent. Too many environmental hurdles to overcome. Gotta keep it 'natural' for the critters man. I think the powers that be here see big wildfires AS management.

If the west side of this state ever got into a big enough drought like the rest of the state gets into and a bunch of shit burned down, GUARANTEED a bunch of people would be howling and shit would change in a heartbeat. Till then - burn, baby, burn!

NE is bad this time of year too. My folks are in Alliance and told me they had snow Friday. Driving up here can be a lot of fun. I was coming back from a business trip to Colorado one April - it was about 70 in Denver when I left, but it was snowing in Lincoln when I got there 8 hours later. I got up the next morning to blizzard warning and Interstate highway closures in Iowa, so I went north on two laners to Sioux City, and got on I-90. Why it wasn't closed, I'll never know, because it was one big ice sheet. I started crawling east toward home at 20-25 MPH, avoiding the brakes at all costs. A Highway trooper going the other way tried to do a U-turn behind me, and slid right off the pavement.

I drove across almost the whole state at 25 MPH that evening. The weather didn't get bad until I crossed I-35 - at that point the visibility was extremely poor. I ended up following an 18 wheeler who was also creeping along. All I could see was his rear lights. After a short time, he stopped suddenly in front of me. I soon realized that I had followed him right into a Rest Stop!

I don't take my life in my hands anymore - there is nothing so important that I can't spend another night if needed.

Had fun on the ham fair, bought some nice strips LED lighting, 36 LEDs SMD on alu strip, breakable per 3, just put some thermic glue on some alustrip i had ( cooling) and made 5 x 50 cm lighting strips, one uses 12 - 18 volt 300 mA.
Put one on the shed outside to light the door and ground at the entrance to the backyard, even in the sweltering sun it;s bloody bright white.

Next one will replace the one in the livingroom 2 x 36 LED's for 24/7 lighting the livingroom and kitchen, no need to put on the light if you come down for a glass of water...

Another one for the Hallway, gives enough light as the current one to light up the hallway, and light up the stairs above so again no need to put on the light if you go down in the night for a leak.
Leaves one spare, just reserve if one conks out.

I often have dreams of tornadoes. Some are just mild rotation that never develops into a fully developed cloud to ground tornado while others are well established and intense. In real life we are not particularly bad around here when it comes to tornadoes. I can only remember a couple of < EF1 twisters that touched down briefly a mile or so away and did very little damage except for the usual downed trees, downed wires, etc. The last few seasons have brought surprisingly very little in the way of thunderstorm activity to my immediate area. In fact the absence of thunderstorms round here these past few seasons has been kind of unusual. Seems these days most thunderstorm activity is mostly well to our north. In fact over the past 2 years I've seen more lightning and heard more thunder in the winter than in the spring-summer. Climate change ? Maybe ? maybe not ?

Got a little hairy yesterday on the Mississippi on Pool 8. Came out of the lock and dam at Dresbach and as we crossed under the I-90 bridge things got very turbulent. Took a couple big rollers over the front, Pushed me out of the channel and over a wing dam and took out my prop as well. Top gust measured at the airport was 44MPH. Granted it was a little windy to start with, but ramped up to ludicrous level in an instant. You know it was bad when the guy running the lock remembers you a few hours later on your return passage. As for the weather in the Rat's region, all I can say is hot. Really hot. 122 F the last two days out here. Should cool off to about 118 or so today. It got so hot yesterday, one of the chickens was on her side and just about dead. Even with cool water with a four pound block of ice in it, water feeders with ice and water in them, and fans moving the air, albeit hot.

We brought her in the house, and I sprayed cool water on her body under the wings, and gave her water via a syringe since she was too weak to drink. I really thought I was going to have to put her down because of the heat stress she was suffering from. She was really huffing and puffing and couldn't hold her head up. A bit later, I was preparing the pistol and went to get her, and she showed a small spark of life she hadn't had earlier. I decided to let her go a little longer since she didn't appear to be in such dire distress. As the day progressed, and with constant intervention, she came around. We we able to put her back in the coop late last night and she seems to be doing fine today.

No pollo asado last night, We had the "other" white meat, which really pissed off the pigs.

Yeah, it's hot here, but you don't have to shovel the heat.

A week ago we were getting a foot of lake effect.

I looked out the windows this morning and the only traces remaining are the piles around the driveway and walk edges where I shoveled - and they should be gone today.

Same story here Kev. Must be that cold front I'm hearing about.

However, if it's going to be low 80s by day, and 50s by night all winter, we are are going to spontaneously combust this summer. Those 122 degree days last summer are going to be a walk in the park compared to what may be coming.

They thought about drinking and fucking because drinking and fucking is how they stayed warm during that period of history. Well, most periods of history where the winters were colder than humanly comfortable. The rest of the year was spent preparing for Winter.

Yep. Actually up in the Adirondacks where a friend of mine lives they got down to about 35 below zero and a town just 20 miles north of his reached 40 below ZERO... the coldest temperature in the country for that day. At those temperatures you make sure you leave no skin exposed when outdoors as frostbite and resulting tissue damage happens very fast. 40, 50, 60, and more below zero occur frequently in places like the Klondike. Much less frequent in northern New York. Here in Southern NY we are expecting snow tomorrow morning with rapidly plummeting temperatures into the single digits and high winds. Best of all I have to be out in it tomorrow morning.

Right now it's snowing so hard out there with hard driving winds that I can barely see across the yard. The windows are closed tight yet the snow driven wind is seeping through the tiniest space and forcing snow inside. Stand by any window on the northwest side of the house and you can feel the ice crystals coming in.

We periodically here on Vancouver Island get "Pacific weather bombs" in the fall and winter months mostly intensified in El Nino years. We have not really had on in a while, but I know what the people in that part of North America are going through when these things go through! The side effects of weakened jet stream contained polar vortex due to climate change,maybe..... :dunno:

n2ize

Basically our "bomb cyclone" was a classic nor'easter, actually very common round here from fall through winter and spring. The "bomb" designation for this one was due to the rather abrupt and significant pressure drop which resulted in the high cyclonic winds. Excluding Hurricane Sandy, nor'easters generally cause more damage round here than hurricanes. Most hurricanes tend to swing out to sea once they get this far north where as nor'easters tend to hit us head on. And being driven by cold air rather than warm air nor'easters give us the bulk of our snow. And once in a blue moon nor'easters have been known to team up with hurricanes to really wreak havoc with our weather.

WWell at the end of the week we are supposed to see some temps in the 50's with rain. Otherwise they next week or so looks fairly seasonable for winter around here. mainly upper 20's and low to mid 30's during the daytime and teens to low 20's during the night time. Will we see anymore intense arctic blasts this winter ? Maybe. Or, maybe not.

Try Lompoc, California. I was there for a few years at it is a nice spot. Open beaches (Name of beach is "Surf City" and no crowds), Pacific missile launch site next door, small town with Santa Maria (100k+ population 1/2 hour drive north.) Santa Barbara 1 hour south. Natural hot spring and a nude beach near by on 101 freeway.
