The same thing mine did, charge the battery. My first power supply was one of those puny supplies and a car battery, it worked.
At three amps, I'd worry a bit about it overcharging the battery if left on for long periods of time. If you're only going to turn it on while you're using it, though, you should be okay.
Do it, but add a charging regulator between the battery and supply.

It could just charge the battery, fry the battery or fry the PSU.
It depends on the size and type of battery. If it is a deeply discharged AGM battery for example it will fry the power supply for sure (or trip its overcurrent mechanism, or blow the fuse).
