Here are two of the reasons US 23 in front of my house has been named "Country Music Highway"
Dwight from Pikeville ( my grandad's hometown) and Ralph from Coeburn (my hometown)

This song has the distinction of being the first and only country song to ever be played on a hard rock station in Toledo Ohio.

Van Buren Ohio (named after Martin Van Buren, close to Findlay Ohio), born and raised in a oil town, worked his a$$ off during the depression when he bought and paid off the house he and my grandmother lived in. He dug ditches, helped build roads, and eventually opened up a gas station/garage that he ran for 36 years. My earliest memories are of that gas station, where my grandfather taught me to weld and rebuilt carburetors when I was 8 years old.

I loved the accents there. Everything was "Mon". The XYL was in a ladies room and some 9 year old was cussing up a storm because she was having some wardrobe malfunction, and she said it brought the house down in there because ladies were freaking at the audacity of the young one to say those things and the accent that went with it was too much for many.

I imagine London is just like you remember it, only backwards.

when I am in the radio room, theres normally at least 2 or 3 radios on at any given time...

one monitors the statewide 800 radio system for NC/SC
one monitors the local police fire and city services of the local towns...
As for my Ham radios, they have been off for a monbth or so now, while i find a way to get new antennas up...

the entire county is home to about 40,000 and the county directly east of me, is home to about 22,000. so, it's kinda a combination of hooterville, mayberry, mount pilot, and hazzard county all rolled into one....

Case in point, when a funeral is scheduled, the church calls the city, and the cops turn all 6 traffic signals onto 'flash' and work escort duty for every procession.

I've never seen that in any other city i've ever lived in, unless the decedent was somebody important... Here it's done as a matter of courtesy for anyone buried here...

but, i digress,

If I am not in the shack listening to the scanners, I am listening to my mp3 collection, numbering some 4500 tunes from 1961 - present, and covering everything from fats domino to duane eddy, to johnny cash to pink floyd, and led zeppelin... I specialize in early rock from say 1965 to about 1985 or so, and can jock just about anything within that time frame...

I can listen to just about anything, except rap... (it makes me hurl)

Blues, and artists like stevie ray vauhan and kenny wayne sheppard are favs, and I can listen to a good blues giutar all day long...

Steve Dahl, the king of comedy talk radio, and the original shockness monster before Imus or Stern (both of whom I like, but they ain't the original!)

http://neilrogers.com

Another of the free-form talk radio gods that has been around a lot longer than others that take the credit. A little on the extreme liberal side at times for me, but always guaranteed hilarious in a sometimes mean-assed way.

And, lastly my goofy little psychedelic music project (former stoners unite! Though a 'buzz' is not required.) I was told it was OK to post it here even though it's my own music. (Thanks guys!)

Awesome. I don't know if you've ever seen Floyd live, but this is a great one in concert. I saw Pink Floyd (sans Roger Waters unfortunately) at Camp Randall in Madison, Wisconsin in 95 (maybe? my memory's a little smoky, I mean foggy) and it was an amazing show. I really wondered what Floyd would sound like on the songs that were originally sang by Roger, but David Gilmore did an amazing job at what was one of the best shows I've ever seen. I was a little unsure because I didn't completely like his vocal sound on the "Delicate Sound Of Thunder" live album that came out in the last 80's. It wasn't horrible but it just sounded weird compared to the original versions with Roger.

PINK FLOYD ROCKS!

Floyd is one of the 3 bands I haven't seen live but would love to, the other two are Jethro Tull and Boston.

I was fortunate enough to see the "Delicate Sound of Thunder" tour. I can't quite remember when...mid 80's I think. They had a deal with the food bank and if you brought any canned goods you could get in for 5 bucks. At one time, I was pretty mobile on the concert scene...that was the best show I was ever witness to. Sounded perfect and we were in the ozone seats.
Love the Floyd.

I really wish I could have seen Zappa in a small venue...That would have been one to remember.
But..I did see Hendrix in Charlotte in '68. He led on for The Monkee's and I had no clue.
My sister wanted to see The Monkee's and Pop made her take me along...I was 11.
She still thinks I'm a PITA.
Which is probably true.

I think I've mentioned this here before, but I got as close as I can to ever getting to see Zappa with the "Zappa Plays Zappa" tour that Dweezil has been doing. They played at Summerfest in Milwaukee this year, and while it wasn't Frank it was pretty damn good. When the tour comes around again I highly recommend if it is in your area. I was little unsure about how it would sound but I can tell you that Dweezil is a great guitar player and his band was able to play some pretty complex stuff. Dweezil played some fairly intricate Zappa solos note for note, and the Frank imitators (and imitators of other former members) in the band were so close. They really did an amazing job. Obviously, you could tell the difference, but still a damn good show if you like Zappa.

Well that is cool.
I have not followed Dweezil, but I do follow Derek Trucks from the Allman Brothers. The kid seems to play the old tunes from genetic gut. Quite amazing from an old time listener.
I will put that on the to do <hear> list.

My lastest contribution to the "What Are You Listening
To?" thread:

http://www.youtube.com/fivedollarguitar

I'll admit that I am biased because the girl in this video is my cousin, but I have to say that she has a really distinct voice and some interesting tunes. I'm a fair amount older than her so it's weird for me to see my 'little' cousin performing all these years later. She lives down in Florida and I hadn't seen her in quite a few years so it was just weird to see, but cool.

I saw the mothers in '68 at the electric factory in Philly. I don't think all 300 seats were full, at least toward the end of the performance.

Wow, now that had to be a show to see. Though I don't think it was Frank at his best even though I like all those tunes (like from the "Freak Out" album.) I only say that because I know he had a fair amount of conflict with the band on issues of drugs and the whole 'hippy' philosophy that Frank wasn't into. According to Zappa's autobiography (which is great, read it if you haven't!) he said that at one point they wanted to kick him out of the band because he wouldn't take acid. Can you imagine kicking out the guy who started the band? For that matter kicking Zappa out of any band?!!

Either way I'm jealous that I wasn't there to see Zappa live, anywhere!!!

Hawkwind - We Took The Wrong Step Years Ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNE6D5Vp9Pg

Hawkwind is really an amazing band, in all of their various configurations over the years, and one that is truly underrated, at least here in the States. Hawkwind is just as high on my list as Pink Floyd and I'm a huge Floyd fan. If you haven't heard Hawkwind check them out, there are a ton of videos on YouTube, and they have a MySpace page as well as a website.

One of my favorite bands, goes right up there with Zappa in weirdness and insanity, as well as being free speech advocates (for obvious reasons!) The GWAR movie "Phallus In Wonderland", which still doesn't seem to be available on DVD or I'd have bought it by now.

The funny thing is that it's on YouTube and it's a totally sick (in a good way, hilarious) movie. It's funny too because it starts out with the FBI warning not to duplicate, etc. YouTube cracks me up. Like I said though it's not available on DVD so maybe they just don't care at this point. Who knows, but GWAR rocks!
