HAH! You reminded me of what I did to a copy during my daze at the pirate radio station adding even MORE loop echo and feedback until it sounded like Chambers Brothers from Mars. Those were fun times, pirates do things even listener supported free form radio never dreams of. Great song though, and one of my favorites from the hippie dippy days.

That post prompted me to download the album that by an odd departure from my usual lousy luck was flac, the free lossless audio codec. Fidelity is superb and yes, the long version of Time Has Come Today. It includes my favorite version of People Get Ready, FINALLY I found the long lost Chambers Brothers, and the Chambers half brother. Nah WNEW didn't louse it up with more echo like I did, the long version is wild enough. I never met the big Weiner or his alter ego Al Insane, but I TRIED to listen to the pirate ship, only the FM came in at my old QTH and weak at that. I never met Johnny Lightning who does his Saturday night hysterically funny mostly talk show on WBCQ by internet link either but I listened to his pirate station in Brooklyn and talked with him on the phone occasionally. Talk about the classic Brooklyn accent, he makes Sly Stallone understandable. Oh, for NH and the railfans out there, he's an electrician for the NYCTA keeping the subways rolling. He's New York Underground X2! Oh, they both came after the NJ network described below dissolved, too bad because he and his station would have been valuable members.

The AM pirate station I worked, I mean played at was somewhat professional, had plenty of power for a typical pirate and a good inverted L so we blanketed the NYC/NNJ metro area by day and the frequency deliberately chosen so the hubbub of nighttime skip would swamp it outside the local area. We were according to record request/shout out logs extremely popular with typically 400 different callers in a one hour period <brag> and the home phone number never given out (like stupid pirates who got traced) and calls taken by by a clever phone phreak relay system from our "city of license". Sky wave works in mysterious ways, I found out my Saturday-Sunday overnight head show had listeners in New England while the other stations broadcast boring Bible thumpers. It was mostly "smoky" music on three hour tape reels only interrupted for the half hour station ID which made it the ideal stoner station, not my main intention, I was too stoned myself to fumble with the turntables except to provide a song while I flipped the tape over. (;->)

This was the heyday of pirate radio, due to my listening habits I used the car radio to track down a few neighboring pirates AM and FM, when I got close I pulled the antenna and when the signal was strongest looked for antennas. That way we acquired sister stations, formed an underground network and shared DJs. I phone patched Allison Steele, WNEW-FMs Night Bird a few times for some lively discussions, had to pause and play music while she did station business, I don't think she found out she was on a pirate station though. Here's a funny one, doing a record request show at a sister FM station and did one of those I'm not going to take it anymore things on the air much to the amusement of listeners and a few teases, probably to test my veracity and/or get my goat. I got fed up with all the Grand Funk requests and ran out of songs playing them over and over, I gave them a rant saying any more Grand Funk and I'll hang up on you. Well, I did, soon that crap ended and I continued with less redundancy.

That was one of the ways I spent my feckless youth, then came the movie, the name of which escapes me, and later still a rant by a Canadian morning drive time talk show/call-in host. That was during the big blizzard of the mid 90s that paralyzed the Northeast for days and prevented me from going to work when some Canadian stations still had 41M SW regional outlets. I was listening to one with the host taking calls, every one complaining about the snow. Finally he snapped and stormed around the studio shouting "This is Canada people. It SNOWS in CA-NA-DA!!!" It took a while, but I finally stopped laughing, picked myself up off the floor and had breakfast.

When it comes to storytellers Jean Shepherd was and is my favorite. I have stories of my own sometimes found here but not on the air, I wouldn't want to compete with the gang of odd characters because in the minds of his fans and a few archives that played on WBCQ, Flick lives! Excelsior you fathead!

I never met Weiner, but a mutual friend knew him and tried to get me to work the pirate station he was setting up on a ship off of Coney Island. It was supposed to be legit, the ship was past the legal limit of territorial waters, but it didn't ring right. So I turned it down since I wasn't putting my 1st Radiotelephone License on the line, but my friend had signed on in my name instead of his. He managed to be on a launch going back to Brooklyn when the Powers that Be were headed out to the ship to put an end to Weiner's episode. Weiner was pissed at me from what I can figure out since I didn't take the offer. There were rumors for years based on the bogus log that I was there, I wasn't. But I did get a certain amount of underground cred and notoriety from it in spite of that. And I haven't heard about Weiner since then. I DID copy their AM signal but not FM and had one of the few QSL(?) cards that were issued from the station, hand written and verifying my copy. Disappeared in the move back in '10. Probably was a good rare piece of radio history.

No, but I remember when the fish channel did. Seriously, there was a cable channel with a camera tight focused on a fish tank so the TV looked like one. I remember when MTV played music (videos) too, only what was on the screen had nothing to do with the song. Their slogan was "I want my MTV!" and I thought "What for?" I remember when I could connect my stereo FM receiver to the cable and hear stereo TV sound on selected frequencies so with the TV to the channel and the FM on I could hear the sound in stereo. Yeah, I remember a lot of things from the early days of cable TV, like the push button set top converter, 36 channels and nothing on (before Bruce Stringbean).
