No, Rat Shack before the devil's next invention, the cell phone. When he invented the telemarketer bung hole and bill collector robot that calls for people I never heard of and the Do Not Call List became useless as tits on a bull a trip to Sinking Shack brought home the answering machine next to it. A few months later it sank sending me to buy on line from China Mart, no goggles ever made can protect against blindness caused by accidentally seeing a Walmartian.

Got a new desk, so I had to re-do the shack layout. This layout takes advantage of the remote head feature of the 857D, so, just the head is located on the desk. It allows for an additional monitor to keep tabs on pskreporter (Or, greyline, or whatever).

You in a bunker or something?? Lotta concrete blocks about.

Nice shack btw. Tidy!

I was born in this neighborhood and spent the first eight years here. In 1959, Interstate Highway I-75 was extended through Cincinnati and cut a path from the river through this neighborhood. All of the buildings in the path of the interstate were razed and, after the expressway construction was completed, new apartment complexes were built. I moved back into the neighborhood 20 years ago.

The building that I'm in is about 1000 yards from where I lived in 1957; my elementary school was directly across the street and was still standing until 5-7 years ago when they tore the vacant building down.

When first built in 1961, "Richmond Village (http://www.artsatmusichall.com/)" it was the home of many pro Baseball players and even some politicians because of it's proximity to City Hall. It was state of the art construction for the 1960's but, they knew nothing of insulation back in the 1950-60's. The problem is, when those cinder blocks heat up, the air spaces inside retain the heat. In the winter, every room has at least one wall separating it from the outside, when those bricks get cold, everything inside is cold.

The neighborhood surrounding it has been "Gentrified" and, it's a matter of time before the out-of-town- owners sell this complex.

Well, the one thing that that the management doesn't have to worry about is hole from folks hanging pictures from that cinder block.

Heathkit SA-2040 antenna tuner. Nice.
I have a junker '2040 sitting here. It will be built into something resembling the tuner in the picture below. Mine will have a pair of meters (FWD Set/REFL Pwr) from an old Royce CB installed above the capacitor tuning knobs and will show through the red insert - just like the SB104/SB230. The turns counter for the rotary inductor will be moved to a central point and will also be illuminated.

Two small Heathkit knobs positioned between the others will be used for the FWD Cal meter function and for an antenna selector switch - which is one thing many tuners lack.

I hesitated to post a shack pic because I really don't have a shack. This is what it would have been if the landlord hadn't reneged on the antennas deal, there they sit all revved up with no place to go. What is working is the Uniden BC796D scanner on the left hooked up to a mobile antenna in the upper left. Incidentally this is my computer desktop image looking into the infinity of video feedback.

Can you run two small wires (magnet wire) in opposite directions in the junction of the wall and ceiling, around the room(s) and load it up with a tuner? It's certainly isn't ideal, and you may have to run a little lower power, but it will get you on the air. I've used that setup in the past. It'd probably get you on 20M PSK no problem, and probably SSB on some of the upper bands, as well. I never had much luck on 40 or 80 due to RFI issues, but the TV today isn't what it used to be, either.

That's an Almende German AM/FM/SW/LW I picked up in of all places Boerne TX. At a junk shop for $25. Works really nice, has the old tuning eye tube between the knobs. I have 2 of the 51-S1 Collins, one works the other is a hanger queen. The old Hallicrafters works as well. Not visible in the picture is a "gilligans island" radio, a Packard-Bell AR-851. And of course the Trans-Oceanic. Sorry I get to rambling about radios. I like them all!

Whomever made Cobra CB sets back in the day (Uniden, IIRC) also made a mic of that style but with a round head. I have one here, paired with a 139XLR.

My parents just sold their 1100 sq. ft. 1953 suburban crackerbox (for an obscene amount of money because the Silicon Valley has grown northward over the years and now encompasses the area) and the real estate photographer did the same thing. A combination of small furniture and a very wide angle lens made the place look like a palace while, the last time I was there, I marveled at the fact that we somehow managed to squeeze a family of five into it's tiny kitchen.

I think we got away with this one because we basically emptied everything out of the house. The photographer was a deadpan guy, but for some reason, he didnt say anything about this room...he wanted us to clear off the kitchen counter instead. Sure...no problem.

Realtors haven't caught onto the home desires becoming more prevalent these days: Smaller is better. My home is 1500 sq ft, and it sometimes feels too large.

I don't think that desire is coming from the Realtors, it's the customers. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but it's not the size that matters, it's how you are using it. Everybody wants "open and flowing" use of space. Now they want open kitchens, dining room and living spaces. I can see that in a multi floor house, but in our ranch style we would end up looking like the cabin on "Little House on the Prairie" . I admit, I screwed up. I have a galley kitchen with a hallway behind it and then a master bedroom. I should have eliminated the hallway and increased the size of the kitchen. In a ranch style house, most of your walls are "load bearing" since it sprawls out. It is harder to move walls or take them out entirely without major modifications in the attic. I like having individual rooms that I can shut the door on. If you have a cluttered mess you just shut the door when company comes.

I beg to differ. Realtors are filled to the brim these days with 3000-5000 sq ft McMansions that they're having a hard time offloading. So, it's what they push. Hard. Not to mention, Realtors are paid a commission based on sales price. A bigger home sells for more money, which means more commission.

What people are waking up to now: Bigger home == more money in upkeep, utilities, etc. Bigger home == Bigger mortgage, which means you're locked in longer, and you've got a bigger debt load. Bigger home == Further away from the urban areas (Generally), which means you're commuting by car, which means more gas money, and longer times spent in cars rather than with family.

There's a reason millennials are eschewing their cars, the big house filled with stuff, and many of the trappings of the boomers. Living small is the new direction we're moving in.

Well here is hoping that you are right. We are averaging about 2 visits a week from real estate agents and their customers. That is really a pain in the ass because we have to clean up the house, load up the dogs in the car and go disappear for an hour. Can't wait until this place sells.
