The left side of the shack was set up exclusively for her - as the multiplier position. Automatic everything; point-and-shoot...but I think she developed mic fright somewhere along the way. :snicker:

I have enough gear stashed to replicate that position on the right side of the console and will set it up once we have the proper location...namely, a rec room or basement that's conducive for a bit of expansion. The Drakes and Cubics will be set up on the opposite wall. Ironically, I'll probably spend most of my ragchewing time on that side of the shack. Color me nostalgic if you will but the older stuff is fun to operate.

Not the sharpest picture, but this is the one I submitted a few weeks back to the "Ten Tec Community".

Some of the items pictured were deliberately placed for the picture (like the PM2B & 2591), but the Omni & Corsair are in their "normal" operating positions.

The shack is still not completed; I have a lot of other shelving work to do, and the Corsair ends up being too high to use comfortably most of the time. But the shack project is on hold until some other things happen; if everything goes according to plan, I'll have a new (larger) room for the shack in a few months & can start over from scratch.

Yep. Soon to be four, plus a couple BCT-15Xs thrown in for good measure.

There are seven (count 'em) 800MHz 'PS' trunked systems in the NEOH area, plus a number of commercial/business systems that operate in both the 400 and 800MHz regions.

And therein lies the rub: With so many talk groups to monitor on a given system, you cannot follow the conversations effectively. Compound this with the fact that Akron's traffic is pretty much non-stop and you begin to realize you need two scanners at a minimum.

Well...we had that at one time. My Pro-2050 and 2052s would handle the non-APCO trunk systems, while the Pro-2096 took care of the digital duties. Then (Flo)Surprise!(/Flo) the town I live in recently announced that it will soon be switching out fleet radios and jumping on the thing known as "Summit County 800 Regional Radio" - which is an APCO25-capable deployment.

Trying to follow this little ol' department sandwiched in between the likes of Akron, Cuyahoga Falls and the rest of the metro area - not to mention the southern Summit County area - on just one (and even two) scanners is a bit tough, and the relative inflexibility of the Pro-2096 in this regard (plus the fact my friend N8XTF was bugging me for a "scanner upgrade") led to the purchase of the 996s at Dayton...and the donation of the Pro-2096 to her.

You can set the talk group priority channel on the 996s to switch over to your "favorite" upon detection of a transmission but the polling method leaves a lot to be desired.

Ergo...four 996s to be deployed. First (bottom one in pic) covers Akron and their cooperative inter-department talk groups along with the Ohio MARCS system, while the top unit is set for the Type II SmartNet system that my town currently utilizes. It also covers the southern Summit County system.

Plans are to set the third '996 up for coverage of the northern section of Summit County, Medina and Wayne and the fourth up for extreme southern Summit, Stark and possibly Holmes. Portage will be added to #1.

The two 15Xs will be used for such things as non-APCO trunk monitoring, FRS/MURS/GMRS, marine, utility and similar monitoring duties. The bank of R-7000s in the picture usually find themselves pressed into single-frequency amateur and CB-band monitoring duties so the non-trunking scanners are free to run in 'Search' mode.

Around here, just about everything is trunked -- every 'burb has it's own, Denver too. I think DIA even runs facilities on a trunked system. One statewide APCO system. Here in the NW burbs, Arvada and Westminster share a trunked system (just different talk groups) on Eldorado Mountain. I think the hams were up there first.

One other little factoid about that photo:

With the exception of the two 996s, one of the DSP-559s and the AT-100 which all worked "out of the box", everything else in the lineup has required repair or restoration upon hitting the doorstep...and I managed to save a metric shit-ton of money by doing this instead of buying so-called "collector condition" pieces. As long as the front panels are in fine shape I can fix the rest.

They were a little scarce when I bought mine (only one). I recall a number of places with the "out of stock" banner. Two years ago? I forget. Wanted to mount this thing in the car, but haven't (yet) found a way to get it to fit in the lower half of the double-DIN opening. Radio'll fit, but the faceplate is too big.

I have 5 (count 'em) of those beasties at present. Three were set up in the shack until recently, when I decided to rotate the Drakes back into service. (The R-71As were paired with TS-940S in the SO2R spot, and 'DSG's operating spot had an IC-751A/R-71A/PS-30/amp/tuner ensemble.)

You can see part of the '71A in this photo; it's now run in conjunction with the Paragon II as is the IC-2KL/AT-500. Astute viewers will gravitate towards the FT-726R with one of the Majick Frequencies displayed on the readout and ask "How did he do that?"

That's actually a Link Technologies MC3 terminal - two RS-232 connectors on rear; switchable from a menu. They're currently tied to the KAMs, but I built a custom cable for the M-7000 which allows it to talk to the terminal and display received data.

No RGB monitor - the VM-4209 you see to the right of the M-7000 is a composite monochrome...used for the M-7000, Theta 7000, 9000 or the R-7000's TV adapter.

Currently working on another Hallicrafters HT-32 to pair up with the SX-101, and, an ART-13 to go with my old trusty BC-348 from the 70s, and use on military nite. The old all mode Gonset GSB-100 has outlasted just about all of them except for the bc348.

I did a little remodeling and used Field Day as an operating proof. First, the side which actually works well:

And now, the problematic one. The left-hand Paragon is awaiting a set of 500 and 250hz filters and must be removed from the lineup for their installation. As for the other...I'm pretty sure there are a number of PIN diodes on the TX and RX bandpass filters that are asleep at the wheel, and possibly one or two on the 1st and 2nd Mixer boards. I have no transmit or receive from 1.7-2.5MHz; the 6KHz 1st Mixer filter (and more than likely its pass-through equivalent on the 2nd Mixer board) appears to be 20dB down in throughput and compared to the other filters.

Both of the transceivers are going to dance with the signal generator and a scope before going back inline.

The Herc-II shown in the picture is currently the world's most expensive speaker: I'm not going to run 220v into the shack for its power supply, and those don't like 110v.

This is an issue I've had with my set-up, which is one of the reasons for my recent shuffling of gear; it's still not as good as I'd like it to be in that respect but it's better than it was. The cart is a great idea but it wouldn't work in my shack because there's not enough room to pull it forward to get behind it. I do have a plan, though. Sometime this year, I hope to turn the garage which lies behind the wall that my gear faces into a workshop. Once I do that, I'm going to put a door in that wall, then build a rack and move my gear so the back faces towards what's currently the laundry room. That way I'll have access to the back of the gear without even having to move anything.

That's a good idea. I can get to any of mine pretty easily just by sliding the equipment forward on its shelf. When we get a house with a full basement (think ranch-plus) I am going to set the gear up in such a fashion that there's an access corridor behind each desk.

I try to use shelving rather than stack gear on top of gear. I think it looks more presentable, is safer, and causes less mechanical stress on gear.

WRT cabling, well, it's not always possible to leave space behind things. I prefer to drill strategic feed-through holes in the shelving, and otherwise careful cable placement -- so that I can get to things, so that they don't get tangled, and so that they don't stick out like a sore thumb.

After going through the thread, I see I didn't post my UPDATED shack photo!
Now there is a Yaesu FTdx5000MP instead of the Yaesu FT-107!

Since this photo was taken, the Yaesu FT107 Antenna tuner has been removed and a Kenwood SM-220 installed in place of the Heathit HO-5401 Scope.
Notice the little undershelf flourescent light. That is so I can read all the controls on the FT5K. Also not visiible is the Signalink USB I use for Digital modes. Hidden to the right of the FT5K is a 2M FM for monitoring 52 simplex 24/7. On the top 2 shelves, also not visible, is a series of VHF Power amps and wattmeters. Also a Yaesu FT-225RD that is set up to monitor the 144.277 beacon frequency from Hawaii.
On the very top shelf is a 10 meter beacon transmitter I keep forgetting to turn back on. I have SWL cards from EU for that one!

On the right edge the neck of the MD-1 Mike can just been seen on the arm it holds.
Turned to the wall if not in use.
The PCB you see boltd to the edge of the homemade cabinet holds LED's to light up the front of the FT 2000-D and also shine down on the Heathkit SB-1000 and EQplus.

Well, been a while since I been on here. Too much work with little time to play. Thought I stop by and say howdy. Really having a blast in the repair shop. Work on lots of HF gear now. A lot of the stuff is hybrid units like the Yaesu 101’s, Kenwood 520’s and 830’s, plus 930 and 940’s. Also Henry and Drake amplifiers. And yes there is still the vintage cb stuff. Got so busy here in the shop I had to move all my RC planes out . Will build a new area for that this winter.

LOL. I am getting ready to build a new store room behind the shop. Then I cam dismantle some of the junk and save the needed parts.
I noticed your tuner. Is that a Cubix? I have one that looks like it in the 5th picture down.

A Cubic ST-3, yep. Cubic bought out Swan way back when; they are a local (San Diego County) company and still in business, although they don't make amateur radio equipment any more. If you should have one in your junk room with a clean front panel, let me know. Mine works great but the painting around the inductor switch is worn out.

BTW, a former Cubic engineer stopped by my ARC's Field Day operation this year and when he saw my tuner, he mentioned that he was on the ST-3 design team. I told him I really liked it and pointed out that another ham there also had one. If I'd thought about it, I would have had him autograph it or something.

If memory serves me correct his does not work. I have not used mine in a while. Seem there were some problem with it. May need a good cleaning.

That is neat that you got to meet one of the designers. Would had been nice to get him to sign it and then clear cote over that.
I see mine is a bit darker in color than the one you have. I will check tonight and see if it is the same model number. Mine front panel is in decent shape. may can scan it and have a decal made.

The photograph makes mine look tan for some reason. It's actually been repainted (poorly, I might add) a medium gray color. Check with your friend, see if he's interested in unloading it. I don't care if it works as long as the front panel is in good shape.

Speaking of the Cubic ST-3B tuner, the inductor knob on mine has been a bit wobbly since I bought it from a local ham in 2009. No big deal, made for a little ambiguity on the setting sometimes but it was easy to sort out and I just chalked it up wear-and-tear due to the age of the unit. Otherwise, the tuner works fine, but the panel markings around the inductor switch had worn out so the previous owner had stuck a label on with double-sided tape. It was ugly, crudely-made and beginning to peel off so, yesterday, I made up a much nicer one to replace it.* In the process, I removed the wobbly knob and discovered that the reason it was wobbly was that it wasn't installed on the shaft properly. I've had the thing for almost four years and I just figured that out yesterday. Sheesh.

I put my new label on, installed the knob correctly and all is well. I did have to remake my tuner chart because all the inductor values were now off by four letters.

I'm almost afraid to ask which four letters. None the less, glad you got it going.

A guy that I used to work with, in his off time, did custom graphic design that he printed off on a special plotter/printer, or something. He used some kind of velum or, hell I have no idea what it was, but the finished product was similar to the stuff that automotive decals are made of. Also like the ones for ATVs and that sort of stuff. Since I was never into that sort thing, I wonder if there is some sort of transfer you can create and print off for the panel, and then clear kote the hell out of it?

Aaa Yeungling, a Ham accessory even I can understand. My favorite. Great Pa beer, but the name doesn't quite roll of the lips like "Iron City" or "Rolling Rock" . My wife thought it was Chinese when I first introduced it to her. :lol:

It was introduced in my area a couple of years ago. Their "light' beer is low calorie/lower alcohol, but has a full flavor that beats the other water flavored light beers.

Oh man I love that train running through that narrow alley with only a few feet to spare on either side. This has the old NYC third avenue elevated beat. The 3rd ave el used to run pretty close to some buildings but this is awesome... Ground level and right smack dab in your face. I wonder what the speed restriction through there. I don't see any block signals or timers. Then again it's only showing a very short section of track. And that track. Amazing anything can run on it. Awesome !!
