Spanning roughly 42 meters, this bicycle and pedestrian bridge called ‘The Twist’ bridge for its contorted and sculptural lines, connects the Holy-Zuid district and the Broekpolder over Vlaardingse Vaart in The Netherlands. Designed by West (http://www.west8.nl/projects/infrastructure/bridge_vlaardingse_vaart/)8 (http://www.west8.nl/projects/infrastructure/bridge_vlaardingse_vaart/)Architects with structural engineers ABT (http://www.abt.eu/en/project.asp?projectcatid=6&projectid=183&tid=41), the bright red bridge makes for a lovely and striking surprise in the natural green setting.
One of many piccies

Too bad we Amerikans are much too staid to invest in such wonderfully whimsical designs. Any form of art here must be mandated by acquisition law, and even then the complaints of the booboisie often outpoll those of the few connoisseurs with taste outside of their tongues. We are mostly a nation of jakes and bumpkins.

You say that like it's a BAD thing.

I for one am arguably the most non conformist but I find the structure above quite unpleasing to the eye. To me it smacks of unkempt design if not total failure.

The Sundial Bridge is located in Redding, CA, which is proof that even bumpkins can get it right once in a while.

Personally i like the design, different, daring, and refreshing other as the standard run of the mill bridges ;)
The above one is another example that lets you stop and have a better look.

Now you know what they do with old cruise ship parts.

Take another toke or two. It's like a wort, it grows on you.
I think it's kind of cool, but not something I would want to try to figure out after dropping a little.............well..............you know.

Yes indeed. We "jakes and bumpkins" prefer to build beautiful spans like this one...

I get the same reaction. Initially It's novel and slightly clever and eye catching but I wouldn't want to have to look at it everyday.

Looks like a few construction projects I attempted that weren't supposed to look like that. Just wound up that way. I think it's brilliant.

It does add a new twist to bridge architecture.
Whoever designed that bridge must have been pretty twisted.

‘The Twist’ bridge
It's wonderful and hard to look at without truly thinking about it. Not always true with public design.

I'm partial to whimsy and oddity that stands out from its surroundings. Even more so if it commands a reaction or reflection.

Nice to be partial to art, which is precisely the nature of these objects. Why do the same old thing when you can let your imagination run wild and stretch the visual envelope? Why, you might even stretch the engineering envelope a bit, too.

And, the engineer type in me asks,"This looks sturdier than a comparable straight line trestle... Is it really?"

The trippy in me is pretty sure that riding a bicycle through it at speed would create quite an unusual sensory experience.

You are free to allow your unfettered imagination run wild. But that doesn't mean it must be imposed on the public. A while ago some 'artist" with an unfettered and wild imagination imposed some "sculptures" along our local highways. Thank God they were not made permanent.
