    Happy Cinco de Mayo

Which is, as Ella puts it, “The day all the gringos get drunk because they think something happened in Mexico.”
All the world’s a stage, but obviously the play is unrehearsed and everybody is ad-libbing his lines. Maybe that’s why it’s hard to tell if we’re living in a tragedy or a farce.

If the Irish can get everyone into their bars on a certain day of the year then by golly the Mexicans can too!
"Hey! What are we celebrating? Is is Mexican Independence?"
    "No."

The funny thing is that actual Mexicans don’t really do much on Cinco de Mayo. It truly is mostly a gringo thing.

(BTW, I’m typing this on my phone while sitting on the aft deck of Ella’s trawler with a fishing line in the water. I can see Mexico when I look up. Also, I just caught a salema https://www.pierfishing.com/salema/)

Damned gringo lushes. Already had two annual drunk days every year, and had to grab for a third and blame Mexico for it. Almost sounds republican...

The battle lasted from daybreak to early evening, and when the French finally retreated they had lost nearly 500 soldiers. Fewer than 100 Mexicans had been killed in the clash.
