I prefer to think of my half-wave dipole as a quarter-wave monopole and its backup. :)

Back-up rig? What is the deal here, hams cannot be without a rig for a few days?
A rig is not like a spare tire, toilet paper, back up for what?
Do hams have back up TVS, freezers, computers, cell phones, wives?
Some rich folks have backup airplanes and yachts.

    Whut are you, unAmerican?

Thanks for the reminder, though. I'm off to check the backup TP supply.

This is my reasoning as well...

Burt, say for example your Flex 5000 crashes (heaven forbid) in mid QSO with an extremely rare DX entity - like North Korea. Would you not like having a spare piece of equipment to fall back on and complete that once in a lifetime contact?

At my place, each bathroom has two TP dispensers (by the builder's design, not mine). The backup comes in handy 'cuz you don't have to search around the house, pants still around the ankles, with a job half-finished!

I've found that it really pays to look before you squat.

As for hobbies... It is what it is. Got a few rigs here, but never considered it to be a "backup thing." The camera stuff appears to be breeding, however.

So do I. I'm self employed with 30 years experience in HVAC, but I don't ever go to a job with just one screw driver... I have a large van PACKED with everything I could possibly need to perform ANY task. The same rationale applies to my love of wireless...

I tried that with the main wife. She did not like it when I broke out the duct tape out and hit me really hard...

But, I really should know better than to apply duct tape to women. My first experience with that resulted in the birth of my twin sons 9 months later...

You need to read the Op-ed column in this month's QST
Why would I care about a 30 second contact with North Korea when every night I talk to Vietnam for 90 minutes with conversation going from culture to idioms?
