From the days of long ago

Stumbled across an ad with the following picture as I was perusing QTH this afternoon:

What's funny (ironic, in a sense) is a recent conversation I had with a coworker - fellow ham - involving these rigs. Rich stated that he was in AES one day when a guy came by with a dolly full of boxes similar to the one shown here. When asked what was up with such a large buy, the purchaser stated that the rigs were all headed for area truck stops, where they would be resold.

I actually have the original box for that Ft-902DM. It's beat up, but I got it.

I just threw a mildewed '901 box out.

My second '901 is now a "901.66", possessing the 12M and 30M WARC bands as of this posting. I have a few more things to do to it then the rig is ready to be put into service.

I gotta get to work on that thing. It deserves to live again.

What is (was) wrong with the rig, Dave?

Once upon a time I had an FT-101. That was a LONG time ago. I also had a Heath HW-101. I had to get rid of both of them when I hit hard economic times a long time ago.

Never owned either but used both extensively.

I sold two complete sets of these to a guy in IN a year ago:

The second "set" was actually an FT-201/FR-101S pair. Both receivers were loaded with options and accessory band crystals. My only gripe with them is that they had no interference-fighting features except for add-in crystal filters.

Of course, my main gripe with the Kenwood R-820 is that it doesn't offer as much coverage as the '101s did. Six of one; half-dozen of the other ... :whistle
