A friend and I are working on a project to free up the 1x2 and 2x1 call signs by researching SKs who’s licenses are still listed as valid and informing the FCC. It sounds a little ghoulish, I know, but they don’t need them any more — dead men send no CQ, as the old saying goes.

Been there, done that.

And that is one of the reasons why there is now a 30 day waiting period between the time a call is cancelled and becomes available. To be "fair" to those who expect others to do the dirty work.
