Ella and I both had to work today so we celebrated my BD with a sailing trip up the bay yesterday. The trip north was easy but we ran into some unexpected fog on the way back south and had a tense moment coming up to the Coronado Bridge, which we couldn’t see until we were maybe 100 yards away. We made it under without incident, but about five minutes after I fired up the diesel to head up into the wind and drop the sails, the automatic bilge pump turned on. That’s unusual on my boat, which normally is pretty dry so I let Ella take the helm while I went below to check the engine compartment. I found water squirting all over everything. To make an already long story short, we got home ok by throttling the motor way back, which allowed the bilge pump to keep up. Turned out to be a failed hose clamp on the outlet side of the raw water pump, which took all of five minutes to fix once we got back to the slip.
I bought a bunch of new hose clamps at work today. All the old ones are going to be replaced—and doubled up!
