    * phone rings *

    "Help Desk, Kevin speaking" (co-worker in workspace next to me)

    Phone call is from a user in our main conference room (board room), who had just finished a presentation on our large touch display screen, and was about to do a different presentation.

    *Uh huh. OK, well if you shut the PC off instead of restarting it, it's no big deal. Just go into the closet [ where the hardware is physically located ] and press the red button."

    "Yes, the red button. On the Lenovo."

    "No, I'm sure that the machine wasn't moved anywhere. It's right there in the closet."

    "OK, we'll be right down."

    So Kevin & I head to the board room. By the time we get there, the machine is back up and running; one of the participants in the next presentation turned it on.

    Presenter looks at us and says "I was looking for a laptop! I didn't know Lenovo made brick sized computers [ ie desktops ] too!" ( She only has one just like it on her desk! )

    * sigh *

    No, Management did.

    But you know what was really scary?

    This person is our Compliance Director. And she was giving the now annual now mandated Privacy & Security review.

    I really don't want to know her password. I just hope she doesn't use the same one on her luggage.

    Yea, and they make more money than you both do, amirite?

    Surprised this wasn't the comment:

    I didn't know Lenovo made "Hard Drives" and not just Laptops!

    You're just an appliance fixer. A repairman. Keep yielding positive results lest ye be erased from the board.

    OK, that's going to be taken the wrong way. It was satirical of the way others around you on the job may think of you. Not a commentary on you or your career. It also ties in to some comments made elsewhere on the Island.

    When I was working for the government as their component level tech for all the electronic machines. controllers, and everything else that had an electronic component in it, I always tried to help the IT folks whenever they asked. They were very good people. They made sure I always got the first of the new laptops and peripherals. Of course, I fixed a metric shit ton of their personal stuff. Radio control vehicles was probably the most popular fix next to radios, TV, and two way radios. But, it included microwave ovens to hair dryers. Sometimes it was a throw away device, but what the hell, it made for a very good working relationship, and the perks for both sides made it worthwhile.

    All of the IT people I ever dealt with were awesome.

    Yea, I worked in IT a lot. And it was not always a thankless job.

    When I got involved in "specialist" IT work with engineering workstations, it was a lot better.
