    Headhunter Angst

I am reaching the point of starting to tear my hair out. And I don't have that much left, so I really don't want to go there.

A few months back, started getting phone calls from headhunters associated with the Robert Half recruiting firm. I had dealt with them about 10 years ago when job hunting, not that it ever went anywhere. So I was surprised to start getting these calls. Turned out, I was told, that there'd been a new effort at "data mining" the old resumes, and mine had turned up. Told the person (very politely) who found this out that I wasn't looking at present, please flag my resume as inactive, and please stop contacting me.

    Phone calls did stop.

Almost immediately, I started getting the emails. Either offering me positions to consider, or asking if I knew someone who was interested in the position. Some of the positions in the local area, some as much as a 3 hour (one way) drive away. I replied to every email with a "not interested" and followed the unsubscribe instructions, if any.

    And still, they come.

I never get an apology, let alone a confirmation of receipt (or even unsubscription)

    Got another one this morning.

This is bad enough from the less than reputable firms, but from RHT? With their reputation? I expected better.

I hate to burn a bridge... you never know what might happen. But this is getting out of hand.

Haff isn't very well respected in the IT industry from what I've been told. No personal dealings, however.

    Oh? Interesting.

Well, following the instructions in the email, I called the local office. Receptionist put me through to the VM of the branch manager. She left me a VM in return. Apologized for the multiple contacts. Said that she doesn't know who this current turkey person is, he isn't located in the local office (which is right around the corner from me, ironically enough).

So the only thing she can do is purge their system of my email and phone information. This does mean that they can't ever contact me again, not unless I contact them to provide the information again. So if that's not what I really want, call her back and we can have a "conversation."

Well, if that's what it takes, that what it takes. Besides, should the need (gahd forbid) arise that I ever need their services again, they'd want up to date info, not a 10 year old resume. I hope.

Let's see if I get any feedback from the email sender. I won't hold my breath.

Apologies if I have previously posted this story on The Island:

I once received a call from a headhunter and agreed to go on a interview with the company he was representing. Going into the interview, I easily had all of qualifications they were looking for. However, at the interview, I discovered they also wanted the job candidate to be fluent in German. Oh well, an interesting waste of everyone's time! I never heard from them again.

About six months later, the same headhunter started calling other employees at my work for the same job for which I had interviewed. That company still hadn't filled the position and were now willing to consider non-Germanophonic candidates. To entice my coworkers to go on the interview, the headhunter was throwing out my name and saying that I had interviewed there and was impressed with the opportunity! I learned about this news directly from my boss!

At the time, business wasn't great at my company. My boss was concerned and asked if I was planning to leave the company. I told him that I had gone on the interview more out of curiosity than from a serious desire to change jobs. This was more or less the truth. Anyway, my boss and I went to lunch and that was pretty much the end of the matter.

Almost a year later, business had really gotten bad at my company. I turned in my resignation and accepted a job with another telecommunications equipment company. At my exit interview, I was expecting my boss to say flowery things to entice me to stay. Instead, he told me: "If you hear footsteps behind you as you walk out the door, it's probably going to be me!" A few weeks later, my boss quit our company and took another job.

My boss was good boss and a very honest guy. Sadly, I attended his funeral about 16 years after we had parted professional ways. He was barely 60 years old at the time of his death.

    Ok, show of hands.

How many of you figured that despite the phone call, I'd still get contacted? Yup, that's about what I though. Unfortunately, I thought so to.

Now, it was exactly 2 days ago (almost exactly 48 hours) that I got that VM from the Pittsburgh Office Manager (or so she said) promising me that she would PERSONALLY remove my email and phone number from their system.

I shot him back a nasty email. Short and to the point; that I'd been given a promise of no further contacts, from whom, and yet here it was again. And then in nice, big, 48 point bold letters (the best I can do from Verizon webmail) bluntly said to quit contacting me.

Of course, we all know that I'll be getting another one from another one of these turkeys in a few days. I guess the next step will be a formal letter requesting the harassment stop. Not that it will...

I haven't been active in the IT field in at least a decade. I'm still getting the occasional email about IT jobs.

Unfortunately, they are all full-time positions and usually for desktop support and/or field service. At 55, I'm not really interested in grunt work, and certainly not full-time.

Those emails get filed in the appropriate receptacle. I don't even bother to reply to them.

Wait a minute. Just wait a minute.

    You're YOUNGER than me?

Oh, crap. Does this mean I have to turn into a curmudgeon now, or at least, a public tuchus?

...and at least half of my job IS desktop support. Now "I am depressed." (And my name isn't anything close to Taggart)

I'll leave that decision up to you, OF.
