    Sailing Hams?

This morning I ran across a youtube channel for the SV Delos. It's a sailboat based in Seattle that is being sailed around the world by a couple and their crew. They post extensive youtube episodes of their journeys, and they mentioned using their SSB radio.

And that got me to thinking, and wondering if any of you have ever talked with another ham on a sailboat, and/or keep up with one?

This is their youtube channel if you'd like to see... https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvL...11EIF1lEo0VmuQ

Somewhere in the logbooks are a number of /MM contacts, mostly on 20M and up. When 10 cooperates you never know what you'll work.

There are a bunch of Cubic Astro 150s in my to-do pile and several came off boats of various types. That line of gear was marketed to the boating crowd by N&G Distributing (Miami, FL) during the late 70s and early 80s. It was rugged enough to be carried to sea and remain functional.

    Sailing Shoes?

All the world’s a stage, but obviously the play is unrehearsed and everybody is ad-libbing his lines. Maybe that’s why it’s hard to tell if we’re living in a tragedy or a farce.

A former club member moved to Washington, NC, on the coast a few years back - specifically because that was where their boat was. 41' or something ketch. He also crews other people's boats (my favorite kind, incidentally).

I don't think he's ever used the MMSN once.

Hopefully that'll be me next year. Going to get a 'yak to go with the 4x4, there's too much interesting water around here.

A friend and one-time student, Al KA3UPY, retired a good many years ago. He and his wife bought a boat and were planning on sailing up & down the East Coast and into the Caribbean.

It didn't exactly go as planned. And no, I don't know the full story. Last I heard from Al, though, they sold the boat and were now RV'ing around the country.

No, not sailboats, but I used to have QSO's with the captain of an oil barge who frequented the waters around here and also the captain of a tugboat both who happened to be a ham radio operators. I also had a nice chat with the captain of a cargo plane flying down the east coast on HF AM.
