Not sure where to post this so here it goes. Stopped into the local Goodwill store looking for LP's and found nothing I was interested in. While heading for the door My wife and I came across a vintage sewing machine table priced at $25. She needed a table for her sewing machine so I grabbed it and it was heavy. At this point I opened it and inside was the old sewing machine and some additional parts. We brought it home and it ran, at least until its dry rotted drive belt broke. A new belt is on order and the old machine is going to retain its place. A little refinishing on the table and it should be good to go.

Pretty sweet. I helped my wife get her great grandma's old Singer going again. A treadle machine that had a factory ordered electric conversion, cloth covered wiring and all. Sewing machines are freaking cool, she has four of them, from different "ages". Her newest is a programmable Brother. But the oldest one is so freaking powerful it will stitch leather.

One of my favorite car companies, Opel, got it's start making sewing machines.

I'm going to come out of the closet. I own a Singer 404 sewing machine and I love the thing. I inherited it from my dear departed Mum. The 404 is gear driven and will punch a needle through sunbrella fabric with no problem. I fix a lot of out door furniture and covers for my boat with it. When we move, I hope to get it mounted on a new work bench in the garage.

If you can find one, a Singer 30-15 is the cat's meow for heavy straight-stitch work including tack shop duties and boot making.

They're damn tough.

Also be on the lookout for older Elna machines. For that matter, anything which uses machined metal drive gears.

I've tuned and timed many of the things over the years, and the two I mentioned are the least problematic of the lot.

That's like grandma's treadle machine, lift the lid and the sewing machine pops up. I got pretty good sewing my torn clothes and repairing button holes with that beast, pretty good at darning socks using that wooden egg with a handle too. Throw it away and buy new? NEVER! Do I look like I'm made of money? Waste not want not!

We recently moved my wife's grandma's machine out of the bedroom - it was taking up too much space, and I was using it as a stand for my printer. The wife keeps it around because she prefers the old treadle machine to her new one. The new one will stitch a pizza if you set it up right, I think, but it's too complicated for the simple stuff she does.
