If you are in Salt Lake, proceed with caution at this eating establishment...

    Talk about 'a small world'!

A good friend of my xyl's friend was the victim of this... Jan cannot talk or eat due to the damage to her esophagus.

I saw this on the local news here. Hope she recovers. That is horrible. They asked for prayers on the news.

There must be a thousand questions about product labeling, types of container, mistake or practical joke, and oh yeah there will be lawyers like white on rice.

How the holy fuck could you mistake lye for sugar? Something just doesn't add up there. Either someone is really fucking retarded or they totally just didn't give a shit about their job and what they were doing.

That's just horrible. I can't even imagine what she's going through. I love my sweet tea too. Makes me think twice about drinking anything at a restaurant. I hope she recovers from this. Awful, awful!

According to this report, a former former employee accidently mixed up the deadly sugar/lye mixture several weeks ago. She thought the cleaning chemical was sugar. When the error was discovered, the employee wanted to throw it away. But, the restaurant manager decided they had to keep it until a district manager arrived. After sitting around for a few weeks, the tainted sugar somehow found it's way into the customer's drink.

Former Dickeys employee: Restaurant knew about toxic mix that ended up in tea

The story is plausible, but who knows if the ex-employee is telling the truth.

Yikes..Lye (sodium or potassium hydroxide) is one of the worst caustics you could swallow. When acids attack the soft tissue the body tends to form a protein barried which slows down the attack. However, lye is a strong base and the tissue doesn't form such a protective barrier. Both will burn you buy lye probably worst. I was accidentally burned with concentrated lye when I was young. I still bear the scar on my leg and will for the remainder of my life.

The other thing is that lye is extremely hygroscopic. Unless the sugar/lye mix was in an airtight container it would not look right, especially after being stored for an extended time.
