Maybe this is why so there are so many grumpy hams?

It would certainly explain a lot:

We already know haters are predisposed to be that way. Now we see they also spend a lot of time at fewer activities than their non-hater counterparts.

But in a twist of irony, that grumpy person at work may actually be pretty good at their job since they spend so much time on fewer activities, thereby giving them the opportunity to hone their skills in specific tasks.

    […]

In two studies, participants reported all of their activities over a one-week period and also completed a measure of dispositional attitudes. Although haters (someone with a low dispositional attitude) and likers (someone with a high dispositional attitude) did not differ in the types of activities they pursued, haters tended to do fewer activities throughout the week than did likers. Nearly 15 percent of the differences in how many activities people conducted during a typical week was associated with being a hater versus a liker.

So, it's not that ham radio makes one grumpy, it's that grumpy people are attracted to ham radio.

All the world’s a stage, but obviously the play is unrehearsed and everybody is ad-libbing his lines. Maybe that’s why it’s hard to tell if we’re living in a tragedy or a farce.

I think people, overall, are grumpier now due to information overload, and the ease at which mass media tends to spin things.

Every day, bad news on the radio, tv, internet... Rarely does one see coverage of good things going on. "If it bleeds, it leads..." Couple it with a 24 hour news cycle now, and man! How can't you be depressed!

Best thing I've ever done is stop using Facebook as much, and keep a tightly curated group of people I follow on twitter.

The song is about the callousness (and callowness) of TV news reporting as well as the tabloidization of all news. Henley sings from the standpoint of a news anchorman who "could have been an actor, but I wound up here", and thus is not a real journalist. The song's theme is that TV news coverage focuses too much on negative and sensationalist news; in particular, deaths, disasters, and scandals, with little regard to the consequences or for what is important ("We all know that crap is king").
