I think many hams miss the most important thing about emcomm: Decentralization. You want to support emergency communications? Build a repeater. Build a packet node. Right at home!

You get the benefit of learning how these integral systems work, and you put your sweat equity into keeping them online.

Multiple, uncoordinated, centralized resources just mean that more of these centralized resources get taken out, and the ones left standing become saturated.
