My boyhood home was on the Wakarusa River. I had many hours wandering the banks of the river trying to find the treasures that were there. The area had been an area where the Wakarusa Indians lived. There was broken pottery to be found in the banks of the river where they had disposed of it and it was reappearing as the river shifted. We were flooded many times. In the late 70's the Clinton Reservoir project was completed and the flooding was not nearly as bad after that. What was not calculated in the design of the reservoir was the fact that the water is very muddy and the reservoir is filling with silt and the ability to regulate and maintain some control over the flooding has diminished. Well, not my problem anymore. Someone else can deal with that now. I have an old friend who can sing about the area we grew up and I can sit and listen to that and remember what was.
