    Why are drums round ?

Avoidance of nodes of tension. Perhaps that would make a good avatar, eh?

That theory would work if they were spherical like pressure vessels, now try looking at the manufacturing process.

    Yeah, I suppose so.

OK, when it comes to acoustic drums what's so modern about analysis? Just ask yourself the question why are hollow logs round. Then one more, why does striking it at different points result in different tones? If the ancients got all scientific about it a modern drum kit would have one log and two sticks... and a bunch of deaf termites. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZclddLcOYYA

To the best of my knowledge, even logs that aren't hollow, are pretty much round, too. However, you can beat the shit out of one just about anywhere with a Louisville slugger, and they don't change tone very much.

Maybe it's the TIMBRE that changes?

On the other hand, roots are square.
All the world’s a stage, but obviously the play is unrehearsed and everybody is ad-libbing his lines. Maybe that’s why it’s hard to tell if we’re living in a tragedy or a farce.

Now you're barking up the wrong log. But you are branching out.
