Flatbush is easy, Jolly Green used it as a stool. Of course there is Nostrand Avenue, it needs no explanation. Moving up to the Bronx for a moment there must be the strangest name for a road in all of the city, Mosholu Parkway. Ah so, is it Chinese? No, Algonquin for smooth stones. Whether or not originally paved with cobblestones I don't know. Another quizzical one is the Van Wyck Distressway that even native New Yorkers don't know how to pronounce so they say it both ways. Is it "van wick" or "van wike"? Don't ask me, I'm from New Jersey where we have names so weird they're unpronounceable unless you stuff your mouth full like... Mahwah. Then there are strange places, East New York is in Brooklyn while West New York is in New Jersey. Before I get TOO carried away I'll say this, life in and around NYC is surely interesting and asking directions more so.
