    Bomber Command Finally Recognised

    BomberCommandMemorial.jpg

After 67 years the efforts of RAF Bomber Command have finally been recognised by the erection of a memorial in London. Nearly half of the 155 thousand men and women of Bomber Command were killed in WWII but Churchill was politically obliged to ignore them in his appraisal of all the armed forces, including American, at the end of the war.

This was largely due to the successful and deceitful propaganda broadcast by the Nazis which is still believed today even by people, such as journalists, who should know better and haven't done their homework. Some Broadcasters in the UK have done their best to remedy this defecit by making programs and publishing true figures, including the fact that the Germans flattened Warsaw eventually killing some 400 thousand people.

It's not clear how, or if, the US contribution was fully included in this because it was a major participation. Certainly Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders were in the Royal Air Force but if any Islander would like to enlighten me please contribute whatever you know.

(Dad was in Bomber Command flying outmoded Handley-Page Hampdens and his log contains descriptions such as "Ploughing" and Gardening").

I watched the dedication a couple weeks ago. The best part was the Lancaster doing the fly by and bombing the event with poppies.

I think that pretty much anyone who saw heavy action during WWII deserves at least some form of recognition - this was a fight for civilization itself.

Good to see politics being trumped in favor of doing the correct thing, even if it did take 3/4 a century to happen.

Its about time! All we ever hear over on this side of the pond is how the good old USA won the entire war by itself.

Im glad to hear someone at least cared enough to recognize the men who defended their home with tenacity and valor.

Now, if Western historians would just recognize the true heroes of WWII in Europe—the Red Army. Compared to the losses suffered by the Soviet Union, both military and civilian, every other allied nation got off with hardly a scratch.
All the world’s a stage, but obviously the play is unrehearsed and everybody is ad-libbing his lines. Maybe that’s why it’s hard to tell if we’re living in a tragedy or a farce.

The defense of Moscow is never mentioned, agreed.

Without the massive sacrifices of the Communists, we would not have our freedoms today. Both China and the Soviets were great allies in that war.

Agreed, but it's not only that, the entire eastern front was horrific. There are still places in Russia where farmers find human bones every time they plow their fields.
