While they are not the same the analogy of data flowing through the internet is somewhat analogous to a fluid flow through pipes as per the volume of fluid that can pass a given point in a pipe per unit time. If we thong of the "data" as a fluid and the medium comprising the networks as passages of varying sides through which our "data-fluid" can flow.
