    Anyone into acid jazz?

    Here's a YouTube example.

Whenever I hear it I dig it and wonder what it is. Seems I NEVER remember that what I'm listening to is Acid Jazz. Somehow the expression "Acid Jazz" trips me up (no pun intended, really). Can't connect the sound to the expression.

    Ah, whatever. Nice listening.

I recognized it instantly as Technopop, it all comes from the same Music Factory under several labels. That piece could have been inspired by I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You from the Allan Parsons Project album I Robot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfeRJ4JBEHc

There's a nebulous line between industrio-techno-dance-pop, and acid jazz. I tend to like all this stuff, generally prefer instrumentals. I listen for innovative "jamming", and if the song does not support that, it's not "jazz", not really.

A lot of it is a "rebirth" of Jazz Fusion. Very much a fan of that. Here's some good artists, IMHO... and some of this is older than the phrase "Acid Jazz".

Yea, I usually think Technopop or Ambient when I hear it. Anyone know how the expression "Acid Jazz" originated?

Yes... it happened in the UK clubs. Mid 80's or so. Records were being spun, with a DJ "messing with it. Live players would show up and join in. The records were typically "looping" dance beats. Kind of like funk beats. However, this kind of music "fusion" has been going on ever since mankind started "jamming".

It all started with drumming circles, beating on logs, rocks, and skins.

The main reason it was called "acid" was because it is a jam session, with the players and DJ's not knowing who was going to show up to play along. Like dropping acid, it's the anticipation of an unknown "trip".

There's a ton of great music out there these days.

FWIW, I've become quite a fan of De Phazz.

And you should check out Yello, and Sparks.
They've both been around for a while.

The amount of good music out there exceeds the level this OF can keep up with. I've been known to spend whole evenings checking it out on the web.
