I'll tell you. Back in the 70's and 80's Times Square was always a pretty sleazy area that I generally avoided. Too many phony hustlers, thugs, sleazebags, and dirt. Nowadays it's even more sleazy, just in a different way. Either way, I still avoid it.
I keep my 2 feet on the ground, and my head in the twilight zone.
Times Square now is like Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco: strictly for touristas. The locals avoid it.
All the world’s a stage, but obviously the play is unrehearsed and everybody is ad-libbing his lines. Maybe that’s why it’s hard to tell if we’re living in a tragedy or a farce.
Ditto Rocky Mountain National Park, all summer long it seems.
And Vail, Breckenridge, etc. Other places to go to instead.

of knowledge to the nipples of ignorance?" ~ Professor "Dick" Soloman
Whenever I see one of those areas...Times Square, Fisherman's Wharf, the pier in Redondo, Station Square in Pittsburgh, el al, it's very poignant. Back in the day, all those areas were too busy doing what they did to make us great. Didn't have time for all the BS tourist hype.
sigh
