    Chocolate Egg Cream!

Such a delectable beverage. If you've never heard of them, the recipe is:

About an inch of U-Bet chocolate syrup in the bottom of a soda glass.
About an inch of milk in the same glass - stir.
Add soda water and stir again.

    Enjoy!!

Last time I looked, nobody really knows why they're called "Egg Creams".

U-bet is the authentic NY Egg Cream chocolate syrup. Hershey's can be substituted if desired or necesary.

I drank WAY too much chocolate milk as a kid.
In suburban Philly we had black & white shakes. Milk, vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup. Perfect with a very greasy burger.
That CM jar on the left was probably a relic found in grandma's cupboard from the early 70s after she passed away.

I forgot about Bosco! How could I?

In those days I was an Ovaltine person. Captain Midnight said it's "The heart of a hearty breakfast." Said so right there on my Ovaltine mug. Earlier, Howdy Doody said, "Hey kids! Be keen! Be keen! Drink chocolate flavored Ovaltine!"

Gonna hafta try an Ovaltine Egg Cream.

Never did Ovaltine, probably didn't like it. Didn't care for Quick or the powdered Bosco either. We were pretty much a Hershey's can chocolate syrup family.

There were straws that had dry flavoring in them that mixed with the milk when sucked through. I remember the strawberry.

Just thought of something else. The way you made Ovaltine was to put the powder in a glass add a little hot water and mix that up. Then you put in the milk. Making it was like a chemistry experiment!

    And...for that certain "extra" flavor.....

In my peak Ovaltine days, my dad installed a new electric water heater. To save money he used the old gas pipes to hook up the new heater. Ever taste Ovaltine with that distinctive flavor of gas scent! Ewwwwwww!!!!! I griped, and he just said, "Won't hurt you!"

I think Ovaltine was a double negative. It must have been expensive or hard to get (which would have instantly gotten my mother propagandizing against it) plus we kids didn't like it.

I used to eat lots of 'ol smokey hot dogs. There was a drawing on the package of an old tree stump with a face and branches for arms & hands that held a smoker's pipe with smoke rising from it.
I have searched the web for a picture of it in the past but never found anything. This is back when hogs were raised locally and fed the household garbage that was collected weekly. EEEyuK!

Last time I looked, nobody really knows why they're called "Egg Creams".
Because they actually used an egg. George Burns and Larry king both used to talk about going out for egg creams when they were kids. Before the big salmonella scares of the 80s, Orange Julius used an egg in their whipped orange beverages.
Raw egg was a popular ingredient in many sweet drinks back in the day.
