I think we just saw the LAST Reno Air Races.

Jimmy Leeward was a stunt pilot who appeared in several top movies... then there was the prophetic Thunder Over Reno.

I just found out that my buddy Randy knew Jimmy Leeward from when he used to work on one of Leeward's other Mustangs. Here's some pix he took from the rear seat of a chase plane:

All the world’s a stage, but obviously the play is unrehearsed and everybody is ad-libbing his lines. Maybe that’s why it’s hard to tell if we’re living in a tragedy or a farce.
I always was fond of the Mustang. There is a group out here that flys a couple, and there is no mistaking a RR Merlin power plant when you hear one.

No kidding. I wonder just how much the human brain can process what is happening in the short amount time between when the plane malfunctioned and he actually augured in. I know I've been in a couple of bad rollover wrecks, and from what I can remember I didn't really know what was happening. I think I realized I was in trouble but didn't have time to consider any available actions. Things happened so fast I'm sure whatever I did was all subconscious reaction. I certainly had no time for thoughts of being hurt or dying, although I did get busted up pretty badly. I can only hope that in the pilots case, he didn't have time to contemplate his predicament or for anything other than trying to regain control.
