Bass player noob

I have been playing the guitar since I was 8 years old, took lessons for a while and the rest I figured out on my own, I'm 24 now. My Pop's (WS2L) is a Bass player and owns mainly Rickenbacker Basses with the exception of his 3 Fender Geddy Lee Signature Series Jazz Basses. Other then that he has the following Rick's: 1975 4080, 1981 4003, 2000 4003 and he is looking for a Rickenbacker 4004 Laredo and a Rick 4000 if the price is right.
