    Something Cool to Think About...

If you can't wait for winter, here's a shot from Upstate New York (not mine).

(I've seen snow like this in Central Massachusetts, but I'm told things are too warm now for that.)

Reminds me of my hand shovelled driveway a couple years ago.

Rehabbing hard, getting stronger for winter. Personally, I can't wait. Ski pass is already purchased, and I'm hunting for new skis, because gosh darn it, I deserve it!

I picked up that little Miata in mid-June, and I still have not removed the hardtop... it's too damn hot! So I keep the "lid" on, and use the AC. Maybe I'll take the top off this week, but we are still hitting the mid 90's every day, some nights it only cools down to 65. Yech.

Here's one from right here in the city. The Blizzard of Dec. 26th, 2010... Visibility was about ¹⁄₁₀th of a mile or less with the wind and snow. I had to walk a mile through this one going home from work. I was lucky the trains were running that night.

Winter is by far the best season here in the Islets of Langerhans. Unfortunately, the Santa Ana season, with it's hot dry winds, lies between now and the advent of winter. Raymond Chandler mentioned them at the beginning of his story Red Wind:

There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge.
That's probably a bit extreme but they do make people edgy, if for no other reason than they're worried about the extreme wildfire danger.
All the world’s a stage, but obviously the play is unrehearsed and everybody is ad-libbing his lines. Maybe that’s why it’s hard to tell if we’re living in a tragedy or a farce.

Don't know how people can deal with that. A few years ago I drove through Big Bear during an extreme drought and couldn't get through fast enough. It looked like any stray spark from a stone kicked up on the road could very quickly turn into a major forest fire. I was a nervous wreck.
