I need some basic WinLink info

Understand , I'm not particularly a fan , but I have a request from a club member to operate a WinLink station at the coming Field Day event , and I need a basic understanding , as license trustee .

First , isn't this mode necessarily internet-linked , and thus ineligible for FD score ?
Secondly , he wants authorization to set up a winlink "account" . Is this simply a registration , or are there fees and costs involved ?

I want to be as inclusive as I can , though frankly this is somethin' I coulda done without . Any hints would be a help , thanks .

Correct me if I'm wrong but WL is a one on one type of contact that cannot be randomly monitored.
Help me understand how this would be used on FD.

It's not necessarily internet dependent, and can be a radio to radio message.
Please keep in mind that this mode is much friendlier as a VHF/UHF activity.

Apparently it's allowable for sending and receiving NTS format messages for the bonus points , as long as it's RF at each end . I found out what I need to accommodate the FD operation. Thanks for the responses .

Maybe where you are but up this way the FD VHF/UHF stations see little to no activity and as a result most clubs have discontinued operation. 73 from We're 2 Dirty Old Rats in beautiful downtown Nazi Jersey... station QRT.
