    Dutch present for New York.

The Dutch government has poured about $10 million into the weeklong celebration of Henry Hudson’s arrival in New York Harbor 400 years ago, generously peppering the activities with reminders of the city’s origins as the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam.
As part of that effort, the government has erected an odd, undulating $2.3 million fiberglass structure in Battery Park that has been compared to the petals of a flower and the blades of a windmill. The building, designed by the Dutch architect Ben van Berkel of UNStudio, will be the center of new public area for tourists and commuters.
“We wanted to leave a lasting legacy a token of our appreciation for this 400-year relationship,” said Frans Timmermans, a cabinet minister who has led the planning of the celebration. (A list of activities throughout the week can be found at www.ny400.org.)
The New Amsterdam Plein and Pavilion was officially unveiled Wednesday by the Dutch crown prince, Willem-Alexander of Orange, but it will not open until spring. The building is Peter Minuit Plaza, which is named for the Dutch director-general who oversaw the early settlement at the southern tip of Manhattan, not far from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

That's an interesting bit of irony, the pavilion was erected in what in the days of New Amsterdam was the harbor. Wall Street is so named because it was then a sea wall at the southern tip of Manhattan Island, everything from there to the ferry terminal is landfill.

Hey, my XYL and I once led the conga line at a show in San Diego while TMBG played that song!
All the world’s a stage, but obviously the play is unrehearsed and everybody is ad-libbing his lines. Maybe that’s why it’s hard to tell if we’re living in a tragedy or a farce.

It looks like some new fangled ship propeller. Fiberglass won't last 25 years in NYC's acid rain.

Thanks for the tip...hasn't been much publicity about it locally.

But the pic in the NY Times link worries me. It looks like something akin to that "Gates" BS event a few years back. Whatever it is in that pic is the same color as the "gates." Hope that's just a bad pic of whatever it is that's down there.

    [edit]
Saw the good pics in the other link -- that looks great! And, so THAT's what I saw on TV the other day with the sound off. OK...there WAS publicity!

    Thanks again for the heads-up.

Thanks Cor. I think I'll visit it when it opens.

BTW, Istanbul has been running around my head for the last week. (NYC was New Orange for a short while also.)
