    Cool My Christmas present!

    I'm giving myself an early Christmas present. My old Acer is doing some seriously weird stuff lately (had to add in a PCI NIC & a PCI IDE controller for the DVD drive), so I'm building a machine to replace it.

    Here it is ... above average performance for less than $800 (at Tiger Direct):

    BTW - the 1st HDD will be for Windows 7, and I'll add Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on the 2nd HDD.

    Coolio, Luke. Really waned to replace a toob TV with a flat-screen this year, but can't justify it.

    Rotley- have HD. You'll be amazed, somehow. Trust me. The dimes are better spent on the audio part of that experience. Or so I tell myself.

    Same question... more performance with 2 or 4 RAM boards/chips

    Naw, it's a 2 pack ... 2 @ 2048MB( I wanted a matched set):
    The Kingston HyperX 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory is a kit of two 256M x 64-bit 2GB (2048MB) DDR3-1333MHz CL7 SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) memory modules, based on sixteen 128M x 8-bit DDR3 FBGA components per module. The Kingston HyperX 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory kit supports Intel® XMP (Extreme Memory Profiles). The total Kingston HyperX 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory kit capacity is 4GB. Each module pair has been tested to run at DDR3-1333MHz at a low latency timing of 7-7-7-20 at 1.65V. The SPDs are programmed to JEDEC standard latency DDR3-1333MHz timing of 9-9-9 at 1.5V. Each 240-pin DIMM uses gold contact fingers and requires +1.5V

    I picked up a Gateway refurbished "open box" special that came to just under $600 with tax. It's supposed to go in the shack, but I have been having way to much fun with it as a media box. Movies rock on this thing, even when streaming MP3's at the same time. I've added another 2.5 TB of storage. Want another one, I'll wait for a return.

    Very Cool Luke! My son got my wife new furniture for the Family Room and got me a 50" Plasma TV for the living room. It came with surround sound but we put that on the grand kids 65" in the Family room. I wanted to get a new rig but, thanks to a gentleman last month hitting my Ford Focus which was stopped in Traffic on the expressway in the rear at 45 mph I got a new pickup insted. Oh well! Merry Christmas to all!!
