No, but when you start 'em this high and then let 'em haggle you down, the suckers think they got a bargain.

    Re: $6000 Johnson 500

Just for comparison purposes, in this month's Electric Radio classifieds there is a complete and listed as very good/currently working condition Johnson Desk Kilowatt with the matching Ranger exciter and the classic HRO 50T rcvr with all coils sets and matching speaker for $7,000. Just me, but I'd put $1,000 more with the asking price of the 500 and score the complete classic Desk Kilowatt set.

Bah fine then...who knows what kind of butchered gear Ill end up with. No, I have a line on a good receiver. Now to track down the rest. Still wanna go with the HQ-180 and ranger setup. Gotta find someone within driving distance so I can see it in action first.

Forget about the Ranger. 40 watts or so on 75/40 can be a real PITA. Unless you plan to use an amp with the Ranger, You need a transmitter that puts out at least 100 watts. Go for something with a pair of 6146's in the final. You'll be glad you did.

I dont play very often though. Trust me, I believe you but I want one. As you said I can always throw an amp into the mix. Or maybe go with a Valiant or 500?
