Last weekend was a busy one here. Rebuilt the old deck and used some horse gates for handrails. The youngest child (19) helping. I put him on tear off after he stopped for texts 20 times while screwing down the first three boards.

Hey cool!
Those horse gates made for some nice looking handrail!
Same project here. Did you find the Trex boards easier than wood?
The composite boards have to be screwed down which takes a bit more time then running the nail gun. I used these same boards on my front steps 3 1/2 years ago and they still look new. Even the best preserved pressure treated shows its age by then. I used the Veranda brand composite boards from Home Depot and price wise they were only $2 more per board than the 5/4 x 6 pressure treated
Tractor Supply had the three sizes I needed in stock. My little resin core wire welder got a workout welding angle iron to the bottom of each gate to be able to screw it down. The gate hinges connect the gates to each other. The deck looks larger with these rails even though they are considerably taller.
A couple pics of the test fit , tack welding and welding of the angle iron to the gates the previous weekend. If anyone is wondering what the poles on the corner are for, They are 1" schedule 40 pipe welded to a piece of angle iron and screwed to the outside corner of the deck for a sun sail that will be going up this weekend.
Nice! I think I'll tear off the old wooden stiles on mine and go with something similar.
Horse gates. Never thought of those. Looks fantastic!
i built decks on the front & back of the house, 6 - 7 years ago. Both need some TLC. This gives me another option to think about.
The old wood rail was shot. I was going to go back with wood framed hog wire which seem to be popular. Too popular as Tractor Supply was sold out of the hog wire. Decided to look at cow gates for the open feel. Got to the store and the horse gates had the 2x4 wire bottoms perfect for keeping the doggies from diving the 10' down to the patio.
i would never have thought of using horse gates that way. looks really good!
i didn't really get to use my balcony (the size of a small deck) this year ... because sitting out there by yourself isn't like sitting out there with people. plus, i'd need to buy some furniture and i wasn't sure how long i'd be here. maybe next summer ...
Sun sail arrived, Threw it up after work this afternoon.
Went to Ikea on Sunday and put the table and chairs together and on the deck. The better half got the Glider from Home Depot. Put it together on saturday.
Added a 48' light string with 15 2 watt LED edison bulbs. I can call it finished. Time to start the work under the deck over the patio. I have a ceiling fan to hang down there. May look for a large sun sail for over the picnic table.
Are those the Harbor Freight lights? There is similar set at Costco. Nice work!
A pic from this evening
Nice night shot. Really makes the cattle gate railing stand out!
