My idea of a good way to spend my day off today was to erect a 32' (9.75m) push-up mast to hold one end of my 20m/40m skeleton dipole.
Another reason they think we're weird is that when we say “push-up,” we ain't talking about a type of bra.

We get fascinated by a pile of electronic components poured onto a table...
That is a good point. Does the "True" Ham still exist? At one time radio was it for an electronics fix. Then along came HiFi, TV, computers, Radio Control, Digital imaging, etc., etc. How many Hams today are in to computers, computer control, digital imaging, astronomy, radio control, drones and on and on. Calling ourselves "Electronics Geeks" might be closer to the truth.
I'm glad I'm not on SSTV.
Radio is a Russian inwention.
They invented nuclear wessels
I resent the words "geek" or "nerd" for someone who is interested in technology , or the sciences. To me it carries a negative stereotype. Does a person who likes to play the guitar call themselves a "music geek" ? Or is a person who likes sports a 'sports nerd" ? What's wrong with the simple old fashioned idea of an "electronics hobbyist" or a "person interested in electronics" ?
And as far as weird people go, well I think people who consider themselves "normal" in that their only interests in life are watching the ballgame, drinking beer, and mowing the lawn, or other superficial activities, to be weird. How can anyone go through life without any kind of deep interest in anything other than trying to be a carbon copy of the guy next door. Of course this is highly subjective but it's how I see it.
In (ex Soviet) Russia, radio tower erects YOU.
We took it back...

Yes, and yes. We took it back, and those aren't really pejoratives anymore, but rather badges of honor today.Quote:

A person just "interested" in something isn't considered a geek or nerd in the subject. A hobbyist would be.Quote:

According to Today I Found Out http://www.todayifoundout.com/index....erd-came-from/
Before “geek”, “nerd”, “dork”, etc, the proper terms for these same ragamuffins were “Dewdroppers”, “Waldos”, and “Slackers”. Other common old slang words that were somewhat similar in meaning: pantywaist, oil can, drip, stinkeroo, mullet, roach, schnookle, kook, dimp, dorf, squid, auger, square, Joe Zilch, and dudd.
Who Gnu? Actually, I can remember being called many of these names. Maybe not oil can, but many of the others.
My definition of Geek was always somebody that was "Introspective" but kind of socially awkward. A Nerd is the same thing, but with the addition of having more income potential.
I agree, although I've come to terms with the fact that I'll only be a dilettante in a lot of aspects of ham radio. I have too many other interests to really specialize in it.
Granted, some of the most boring hams I've ever met are entirely useless for anything else but...
According to Webster...
geek:
"a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake"
I'm curious how you convinced her to let you hook up a ladder line and run full kilowat through it...granted she is wearing it. If she is, that would provide a great ground.
....hmmm, i wonder if Devie would allow me to try hooking up a delta loop like that...nah, nevermind. Let us know how it works out for you over there, i suspect we will be bring you back to Vegas with us as you may be out of a home.
I see absolutely NO shame in being called a nerd or a geek...yes, i truly am a music geek! I really dont have a problem with it, and i absolutely was made fun of in school (like many of us) for also being a science/radio nerd. The way i saw things, those making fun of me were about as smart as a bag of hammers and i couldn't imagine being arrogant about something like that.
You know you're among friends though when you talk about putting up a new antenna/relocating a current one when the first thing they ask is "How's the SWR?"
is it spuds, or spudz?

From urban dictionary:
nurd
A nerd who is neither geeky nor dorky. A nerd who knows who he is and what he is, and is confident in his superiority. A nerd neither lacking in social skills nor friendships. What all nerds aspire to become.
Hey, guys, don't talk about Tom like that. Just 'cause you aren't a nurd doesn't mean you have to display your jealously so openly.
