Remember those Radioshack X-in-One Electronic Project Kits? I bet you do! And, I bet you owned one.
I've been hunting for something similar for my kids, I know it's what gave me my jumpstart into electronics.
Well, Rat-shack gave up on them for the most part. But...

Never had one of these, but i still use the doorbell you could make with the 33 chimes I.C. they sold :snicker:

They had the door bell deal, A short wave reciever,An alarm clock. I can't remember the rest. Thats 35 years ago.
I had the 100-in-1.
Which became a gazillion-in-one sometime along the road, as the parts were "liberated" and found their way into lord knows what.
Snap-Circuits are the "new way" to go with regards to the all-in-one kits. I got a couple of the assortments for my nephew and he really enjoys them.

How old are the kids?
Can you stick them with a breadboard, a couple hundred components, some wire and a couple of books?

Do you remember the Rat Shack sound effect chips? Just add some buttons and a battery, you have a Foley in your hand. Suddenly sales plummeted and Shack discontinued them when CB mics started coming with them built in.
Lest I forget, anyone in the NYC Metro area remember the 2M repeater in Linden, NJ? The controller messages were a hoot, Tarzan and Jane had me in stitches, then things got out of hand and the FCC put an end to it. Now what did I say about CB??? :rofl:
Hum..mine came from Ramsey I think. But in my defense Rat Shack went downhill when I was just a small boy. Actually I cant remember when I saw anything ham related at rat shack let alone anything worth buying. Last PL259 connector I bought there was in like 2004 and I havent seen one since. I dont even think they sell CB stuff at the local one. As a matter of fact I dont think the local one even sells scanners.Quote:

I was putting the finishing touches on the final wiring when I was about 13 or 14, it was about 12:30am and it came to life. Scared the schistosomiasis out of my brother in the next room! He screamed there was a UFO outside the window! My parents of course, got up and yelled at me.
Ah, nothing like solder smoke in the AM.
Especially when you use solid wire solder and a drop of hash oil.
