Stopped off at the gas station on the way home from work today. In line to pay, there was a cute girl (maybe 16-17?) in front of me who was buying a couple candy bars. The attendant is this guy who's been there forever (maybe the owner?); mid 40's I'd guess, and I'm thinking he might be from Pakistan, or that part of the world, anyway. He basically throws the girl's change on the counter, like he's pissed off. Seemed odd to me since I've always known the dood to be both polite and friendly. As the girl leaves, he's glaring at her, shaking his head.
Must have caught my look -- I'm thinking "she had to have done something." He explains it all to me. "Teenagers in this country have no respect," he says. "I've been in countries all over the world and have never seen disrespectful teenagers like in the U.S." Her infraction? Instead of handing him her money, she tossed it on the counter. He gave me a demonstration of how it should be done, using the bill I handed him. Guess I passed the test.
Don't get me started . I did thank a convenience-store cashier the other day , new on the job , 20ish , for counting my change back . I told her some of us appreciate that , the same ones of us who don't park in the doorway , and always pass through it on the right side . She smiled . Her manager just looked puzzled .
And then sometimes , language and culture just cause confusion .......
