At one time, I had an HT-37 with an SX-101A. When I acquired that combo, I already had an SB-301, so I foolishly gave up the 101.

Later on, I had glommed on to an SX-111, also a near-mint S-108. The 108 spent many a summer tuned to 1020 kHz, it had better audio than any other AM BC receiver in the house. (Big surprise). Sadly, those rigs (along with the 6 & 2 meter transverters, an HT-41 linear, a TO Keyer, an R-48 speaker... I just about had it the whole shebang) got sold when I got laid off and had to worry about making the mortgage payments.

Now, everything is "collectible" and the "collectors" have driven up prices. But, I still have hopes.

Nice receiver. I used to see a lot of these at Harrisons when they were located in Downtown Manhattan. They had at least two walls filled with old boatanchors. Now, what happens if you need tubes (valves)?

You go to my junkbox or the nearest hamfest - where all the recent SK's tubes are being auctioned or a specialized vendor is set up (I know of several who make the rounds).

There's also a guy in Oceanside, CA who sells tubes on the Web and Antique Radio Supply. Most receiving tubes are still easily obtained; it's the medium power RF amplifier tubes that can be hard to find.

They are pretty easy to find as well but the prices are high unless you buy the less expensive Chinese versions. I require mostly 6146's, 807's, 811's, and 4-400's. Sometimes you can also buy used tubes that still have plenty of life left in them. They'll also last a pretty long time provided you don't beat on them too hard.

John is right WRT most tubes - especially receiving tubes. If the circuit is properly designed and imposes minimal load on the device, they'll last a long time.

I can think of a few exceptions in several highly-regarded pieces of amateur gear. It seems they chew through mixers and IF amplifier valves like nobody's business.

My favorite Hammarlund (an HQ-180) operated for years without requiring tube changes. The sole failure in the rig during the time I owned it involved (you guessed it) two solid-state devices in the power supply section! :lol:

I have an HT37 and a SX101A for my vintage setup. The SX101A was gone over and recap'd. It works beautifully. Now the HT37 works great, except it seems to be someone squirley. It tends to shift suddenly about but usually stays in the passband of the receiving end. I think it is a mechanical issue that I have not looked into.
