I watched an interview of him some time ago, as a prelude to the network TV showing of The Tommyknockers. In the interview, King recounts his dad and uncle discussing baseball...and his young mind fixated on the Twi-Night Double Header which he felt for sure had taken up residence under his bed.

And now you know one of the spark plugs which ignited his penchant for writings of monsters.
