That's an insult to reptiles everywhere.
If the person in question was a white homosexual, would this incident be getting the same amount of press?
He would appear to be well liked in the community. So probably yes.
MPD and the Monmouth community's response to this is different than what you are suggesting. White or Black, gay or not, Monmouth has a long history of basing it's response on who a person or his family is. Good Old boy standards. DuWayne is one of those people that everybody likes and so is his family. But yes in this case, I think it really wouldn't matter. The community as a whole is very angry.
I'll tell you how things work in Monmouth (Warren County, IL). In 1966 a young man from Kirkwood, IL beat and raped an old lady and left her for dead. Another woman was found murdered. The Prosecutor at that time is said to have been "friendly" with this young man's mother. Instead of Prosecuting the young man, they decided it was best to run him out of town. The Wiki doesn't tell the true story about what occurred in Monmouth back then, but the old people do and the story was retold in the newspaper several years ago. He was captured, jailed and released for lack of evidence and told to never return.
And now.....The rest of the story:

I sure hope it's just immature kids being stupid. Not that that's an excuse for such destructive behavior, but it's relatively better than it being a true hate crime.
Glad your friend is OK. The damage can be repaired or replaced.
And I hope to hell the local yokels catch whomever did this. If it's kids, their parents should pay restitution (on top of fines) and they should do some hard labor type of community service. However, if it turns out to truly be a hate crime, fry the bastids.
