One could even call that merger... kinky. They were once part of the so-called "Seven Sisters" that dominated the world petroleum industry. That, and Mobil & Exxon were originally part of the old Standard Oil trust; when the trust was broken up, they were Standard Oil of NY & Standard Oil of NJ, respectively... later Mobil & ESSO.
