So, I'd like a little more power out when operating at home. QRP is great, but I don't think operating QRP all the time will be enjoyable for much longer.
Now, I already have a full-sized transceiver (FT840) which I'm planning to sell to get the 857D. But then I stumbled onto the HFPacker Amp. It's doesn't work on VHF/UHF/6M though.
So, thoughts? Smaller amp to get a little more power out, or just get the 857?
since you said "at home" im thinking you want something to keep at the house? are you wanting to have VHF/UHF all mode capabilities? if not interested in 2m ssb/cw or 440 ssb/cw honestly for a home station id sell the 840 for a ft-950. if you want the 2/440 ssb/cw capability go for a FT-847 or a TS-2000.

I understand. When I'm camping, traveling, and such, I just carry the 817 in a small bag with the essentials. I only use the FL110 amp at the house when I want to use the QRP rig with a bit of power. IQuote:

That one is on all day used as FM radio/AM radio and for 2/70 repeaters working here.

THe only new one here is the FT 847, the others are good 3nd hand ones, even the FT 2000-D...
I think it would be much easier to 'mobile' with an FT817 on a bike than an FT857. I've used my 817 mobile in the past, and it does surprisingly well, even with Hamstick antennas.
There are other amplifiers out there than the HF Packer, too. There are at least two out of China for the same price as the HF Packer that put out 50 watts and will do bandswitching with the 817 - http://www.sainsmart.com/hf-ham-radi...d-80m-10m.html I see a similar one on EBay that's 100 watts for $239.
I took the IC7000 out of my pickup because I think it's too nice to abuse that way, and I'm thinking about getting one of these amplifiers and putting my 817 in the truck.
The 857 would be for at home, as would the amp if I go that route.
I have two FT-857s and an FT-847. I really like the FT-857 for mobile/portable use, but it would not be cool backpacking.
The menus on the FT-817, 857, and 897 are basically identical, so you'd be familiar. However, since this is for home, you might prefer the 897. Bigger knobs. :mrgreen:
