So, I figured, hell. Let me try out winderz 7. I figured, meh, I've done plenty of in-place winderz installs and upgrades, no need for a backup...

So, I tried out the upgrade on my netbook. No dice. No Winderz XP to Winderz 7. Fine. Let me do the in-place install. No dice. Some error during the restart phase after starting services.

Now, I moved the winderz directories to a off-name (backup and backup.000)... Let me see if it does it now. Everything I've seen is "bad burn" or "bad download". I know it's neither due to
a) This is the Volume License, and we've used this disk image a lot.
b) It's on a USB disk, not a DVD...

This is going to be a long night.

I don't want to upgrade. My XP is stable for the most part. Goshdarnitatall!

Ok, I think I figured out what I did wrong. I didn't set my USB drive as the first boot device. Winderz is picky about the cycle it goes through during install.

Move the old backups, and set the USB drive as the first boot device. Voila! Works now.

I hate to admit it, but this thing is damned fast. I am no Winderz fanboy. But so far, I like it. And this is a netbook (Acer Aspire One, 1 GB of RAM, 160GB HD) running Aero!

Needless to say, I am surprised.

Man. So, I had a bunch of left over files from the botched installs, and my old winderz xp install. Trying to clean them up, and kept hitting "You need blah blah blah user permissions to perform this action".

I changed file ownership (Like in the S2K to S2K3 conversion). Figured I had it licked. Nope. Apparently, Winderz 7 (an Vista) relied heavily on CACLS as well. This fixed it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930527/en-us

Now, got the files cleaned up. Again, I hate to say this: I love this OS so far.

I hear Windows 7 is one slammin OS. Possibly the best OS out there today. I might give it a try. Who knows, I might wind up migrating from Linux to Windows. And why not ? It makes sense to use the best OS available,

Not yet it isn't.

Give Microsoft another 15 years, they'll get it right.
